Bernie Sanders: Finance guru (a Sunday open thread)

Did everybody make it through Christmas OK? There’s still a little prime rib left but otherwise I think everything was devoured during a fairly impressive feeding frenzy here.

Our tree is already out of the house and on display in the family’s museum of natural Christmas history:

While everybody still eases back into normal activities and the Cotton Bowl tailgate party plans continue to take shape at my place, here’s a Sunday open thread for whatever’s on your mind, brought to you by Oscar Mayer Thick Cut Bacon, Crown Royal, Pepto Bismol and Happyscrapper.

A couple things to kick it off…

Bernie Sanders is baffled by how interest rates work:

That’s just not fair! Vote for Bernie and he’ll make sure mortgage re-fi rates are also 10 percent so everything’s level.

Is Sanders saying that student rates would be lower if mortgage companies loaned the money to students for educational expenses? Only if Bernie could figure out a way for student lenders to be able to recover hundred thousand dollar loans by foreclosing on degrees in Widget History and Na’vi Anthropology the rates might be lower.

A pair of Washington Post reporters speak truth to power by criticizing Hawaii’s public officials for failing to name anything meaningful after Barack Obama:

Obama’s return to the place of his birth also calls to mind an embarrassing record of legislative stumbles: Since 2009, Hawaii’s politicos have sought to name two schools, an abandoned lot, a scenic overlook and two state holidays after Obama. An effort to put the 1960s-era cinder-block apartment building — where he lived — on the National Historic registry also fell short.

For now, the most famous thing that bears Obama’s name here is the “Snowbama,” a shaved ice that’s a mix of lemon, lime, cherry and passion guava flavors and sells for $4 at Island Snow, one of the president’s favorite vacation haunts.

If it makes them feel any better, the entire country’s stuck with what’s known colloquially as “Obamacare.” Hawaii’s Obamacare exchange recently sank, taking $200 million taxpayer dollars with it. So it’s unfair of these “reporters” to say money hasn’t been spent on legacies to Obama — it’s just that you need a bathyscaphe to go see them.

Get this: Team Hillary is going to give Bill Clinton a higher profile in the coming months in an attempt to ramp up her campaign’s effort to portray Donald Trump as sexist and bad for women.

Bill Clinton?

Bill! Clinton!

Excuse me for a second…

Hillary’s effort to address mass shootings by ensuring that people on the “no-fly” list can’t buy guns even though nobody on the list has ever committed a mass shooting has inspired other Dems. The Virginia Attorney General, with Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s blessing, is implementing initiatives that will hit where the problem isn’t, as Gabriella Hoffman points out:

In a startling move, Attorney General Mark Herring has announced that, following an audit conducted by his office, Virginia will sever concealed handgun permit (CHP) reciprocity ties with 25 of 30 states. The audit determined that their regulations were weaker than current laws already in place here in the commonwealth.

This move, Herring argues, will deter those with a questionable history of stalking, drug dealing, or inpatient mental health from legally carrying a concealed handgun here. Additionally, his office claims this move will protect existing Virginia law by holding out-of-state permit holders with fewer restrictions on concealed carry to Virginia standards.

But stopping reciprocity agreements with 25 states will do nothing to deter crime here in Virginia. The question that should be asked of Herring is this: Why target CHP holders if they aren’t committing the majority of crimes?

Read it all here.

But since guns don’t make people safer (as many Dems insist), some Virginia Republicans are, in the name of bipartisanship, trying to help protect Gov. McAuliffe:

Government officials should always lead by example, even if a legislature has to drive away the hypocrisy by force.
