Go figure: It looks like Rep. Joe Wilson was right after all (Open thread)

My daughter’s graduating from high school today, so here’s our usual Sunday open thread to keep the conversation going while I’m at the festivities wondering where the time has gone.

A couple things to kick it off…

Remember when this happened during an Obama speech to a joint session of Congress in 2009?

Fact checkers such as Politifact backed up Obama by rating Wilson’s claim to be “false,” but of course the law had barely begun to be implemented.

Fast forward to 2016:

What a, uh, surprise.

But only two years after the largest coverage provisions in the Affordable Care Act took effect, the country’s most populous state has passed a bill that, in fact, seeks to extend Obamacare to people regardless of their immigration status.

The bill, now before California Gov. Jerry Brown, aims to allow people who are in the country illegally to buy private health insurance on the state’s exchange. Its author, Democratic state Sen. Ricardo Lara estimates that 390,000 such immigrants could receive health insurance, but officials who operate the exchange place that number closer to 50,000.
Obamacare explicitly bars people in the country illegally from its provisions, but a loophole called the “innovation waiver” allows for states to change portions of the law, as long as they make coverage available to more people and as long as the federal government doesn’t have to pick up the tab, among other requirements. The bill, which would require that a request for a waiver be filed, first must be approved by the state legislature and the governor before the waiver can be considered by the federal government.

Proponents of the bill said people in the country illegally getting insurance through an Obamacare exchange wouldn’t qualify for the federal subsidy — in other words taxpayers wouldn’t be on the hook for any of this. Sure, and “if you like your plan you can keep it.”

From the “you can’t make this up” department, we have this: Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was among a contingent of U.S. mayors who traveled to Cuba to swap ideas about “economic development.”

Here’s more about the “mostly harmless” illegal aliens ICE has been releasing into the general public:

They were among the nation’s top priorities for deportation, criminals who were supposed to be sent back to their home countries. But instead they were released, one by one, in secret across the United States. Federal officials said that many of the criminals posed little threat to the public, but did little to verify whether that was true.

It wasn’t.

A Globe review of 323 criminals released in New England from 2008 to 2012 found that as many as 30 percent committed new offenses, including rape, attempted murder, and child molestation — a rate that is markedly higher than Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have suggested to Congress in the past.

The names of these criminals have never before been made public and are coming to light now only because the Globe sued the federal government for the list of criminals immigration authorities returned to neighborhoods across the country. A judge ordered the names released in 2013, and the Globe then undertook the work that the federal government didn’t, scouring court records to find out how many released criminals reoffended.

Read it all here.

And just last year:

According to a new report from the Center for Immigration Studies, Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2015 “freed 19,723 criminal aliens, who had a total of 64,197 convictions among them.”

This included “8,234 violent convictions and 208 homicide convictions.”

ICE Director Sarah Saldana defended her agency, even characterizing the statistics as an improvement while claiming they were being politically manipulated.

This is the kind of thing you do if you’re trying to intentionally destroy a country from the inside-out.

A judge has postponed a deposition of Homebrew Hillary’s ex-tech aide until he can determine the scope of Bryan Pagliano’s immunity agreement with the government:

A federal judge has ordered Bryan Pagliano, Hillary Clinton’s personal information technology specialist, to produce details of his immunity agreement with the Department of Justice, which is investigating the mishandling of classified information on the former secretary of state’s email server.

Judge Emmet Sullivan also indefinitely postponed Pagliano’s deposition with the watchdog group Judicial Watch. Pagliano’s lawyers informed Sullivan earlier this week that the former Clinton aide would plead the Fifth during the deposition.

Presumably Pagliano wouldn’t be allowed to plead the Fifth in areas he’s been granted immunity, unless the Obama Justice Department “forgot” to spell that out in the deal Pagliano reportedly signed.

Here’s a juxtaposition courtesy of somebody with a sick and twisted worldview:

The wind-up:

And the pitch:

It depends on what your definition of “cruel” is, right Hillary?

Have a good Sunday all
