Who’s in charge here?!
Allan Wall, an American who lives in Mexico, is one of the best commentators on U.S.-Mexican relations and the failures of immigration enforcement. Unlike much of the elite punditocracy who claim to represent voices of “realism” on these issues while ensconced in their editorial offices, Wall reports from the trenches. In the Houston Chronicle today, Wall notes the growing influence of the Mexican government on U.S. immigration policy–and in particular, the role of Mexican consular offices:
The Mexican government is engaged in a deliberate strategy to influence American immigration policy, increase the population of Mexicans in the United States, slow their assimilation and retain their loyalty to Mexico. This is no secret conspiracy — Mexican leaders speak openly of it. It is already bearing fruit. If allowed to continue, the inevitable outcome will be effective control of U.S. immigration policy by a foreign power.
The op-ed provides an overview for a general audience. Wall reports more extensively on the campaign to undermine immigration laws here. His warning about our neglected sovereignty echoes Samuel Huntington–and his on-the-ground reporting puts negative reviews of Huntington’s book like this one in their proper place.
