STRANGE LOVE

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 13, 2004 11:32 AM

Athenae, posting on the premiere liberal blog run by Atrios, seriously thinks the public displays of affection (or rather, affectation) between Teresa and John Kerry are admirable and healthy. Athenae swoons:

I know I’ve said this before, but if we truly are electing people based on who you want to have a beer with, the last guy I want to have a beer with is the jerk who treats his wife like dirt, condescends to her in public, or complains about her in front of me. The married people I have beer with on a regular basis have (from what I can tell) healthy, adult marriages based on like and mutual respect, and nothing warms me up to somebody faster than that person praising their spouse. I have no idea what goes on in the Bushes’ marriage, nor, for that matter, in the Kerrys’. But I like what I see of the two of them, that’s for sure.

Hmm. The happily married, mutually respectful people I know (myself and my husband and included) do not sigh heavily and roll their eyes looking petulantly bored when one or the other partner is speaking. The happily married spouses of veterans I know do not mock their husbands’ traumatic war experiences in public. The adoring wives I know do not have huge conniption fits over adopting their husbands’ names.

I don’t drink, but if I did, I would be afraid to get anywhere near John, Teresa, and their beer mugs.

He’s running for president. Shouldn’t we be less concerned with getting a beer with the Kerrys than with getting, say, their tax returns?

Besides, didn’t we share enough of the personal psychodrama of the Clintons’ marriage to last us all a lifetime?

So you don’t think PDAs are good?

Wow, I never thought anyone hated Clinton more than me.

Then, Athenae comes along with her expectations of what a husband should be.

After all, Clinton told Monica he’d been with “hundreds” of women. He assaulted women like Kathleen Willey in the White House. And, Juanita Broaddrick accused the President of rape, on national television.

Then again, Athenae probably doesn’t mind Bill’s antics and crimes. That’s because Athenae knows that Hillary tacitly supported Bill’s wild ride this whole time. That’s mutual respect for you!

After watching a week of John Kerry and John Edwards do everything but kiss each other as they paraded around the country. I started watching how John Kerry treated Teresa in many of their televised appearances in the last week.
On a stage where he and Edwards were being introduced. Teresa Kerry stepped between John Kerry and the television camera. He pushed her out of the way, this was not a little guiding tap. He pushed her by placing his hand in between her shoulder blades and actually caused her to jerk back in response. I watched this a number of times in slow motion, I then showed other people (married people and unmarried), they were shocked at the body language. On woman said, “If my husband ever push me like that in public, he would pull back a bloody stump!”
There is another gathering on a stage that John Kerry pulls up Teresa’s arm like he is a prize fighter, I am not sure if it is pain or disgust on her face, but she is certainly not happy.
On the AP, there is a great picture of John Kerry trying to plant a kiss on Teresa. She has her hand between their mouths and you can see the grip he has on her arm, it is not a normal friendly grip.
We need to have someone start going over these images and get some expert advice on the Kerry relationship. It certainly isn’t a normal healthy relationship!

The Athenaes of the world have a different idea of what a happy couple looks like than I do.
I have no problem with PDAs, within reason.
I’ve no quarrel with a hello or goodbye kiss in public the Owl Gore/Tipper mauling at the convention was too much.

Clark - it’s not moronic crap! The modern liberal metrosexual male is basically dickless* and totally adopts his wife’s personality and beliefs. So, if the wife turns out to be psycho, then the public needs to know before the election. Got it?

*subject will desparately try to prove otherwise with pizza, cigars, & dippy young interns.

Pre-2003 interviews of Teresa and Kerry showed that they acted very coldly to each other.

Teresa would go on and on about her wonderful husband and what a great man he was. The problem for Kerry was that she was talking about her dead husband-John Heinz. She would always add that she thought Kerry was not near the man that her dead husband was.

Kerry would roll his eyes and stare at the ceiling. That is why Kerry cannot keep his hands off of Edwards-he is starved for affection.

Clark, trouble is, we are in an era where candidates are so far removed from voters, with so many layers of spin doctors and handlers that the only way to get a glimpse of their character and real personality is to study their interaction with those close to them. What else can we do, listen to what the Johns say? That’s real useful, it changes by the day.

Can someone tell me what Kerry had happen to him, in the 4 months he was in Vietnam, that would cause him to have nightmares? I was there for 1 year, no ribbons, no nightmares, and an unreasoning rage over the way I was treated when I got back. And that was because of his testimony in front of congress. What the hell gave him nightmares?

So it’s appropriate for candidates to tout their happy marriages and speak about their commitment to “conservative” values, but it’s not appropriate to challenge that assertion when evidence to the contrary emerges? I guess I should no longer be surprised by these kind of “have it both ways” moralisms.

I always enjoy seeing you and hearing your opinions.
I am sick to the point of nausea of hearing about Clinton; both of them enjoy the attention TOO MUCH.
As fot the Kerrys, if we are headed in that direction and the embarrassment from adults who can not behave in public I vote Enough!
It may be they are staying togather as the Clintons did for bigger and better things. Perhaps she ( Mrs. Kerry) is not happy in the bedroom now that he has had his surgery and perhaps likes different types of attention if you get my drift.
If she is being kinda forced to help him get elected he will be distracted by this obviously neglected woman.
