SHOULD THE FEC GET INVOLVED IN FORGERYGATE?

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 11, 2004 02:13 PM

I received an e-mail from BoycottCBS.com calling on the Federal Election Commission to hold CBS/Viacom in violation of federal election law. Their argument is that the media exception to McCain-Feingold does not apply in cases of fraud and does not cover “electioneering coordinated with a political campaign.”

BoycottCBS.com’s heart is in the right place, but they are kidding themselves if they think a conspiracy between CBS and the Kerry campaign to commit fraud can be proved. Even if it were proved, what good would it do if FEC levied a small fine on CBS 2 or 3 years from now after it completes a lengthy investigation?

Instead, I suggest asking CBS to immediately assemble an independent commission comprised of forgery experts. The commission should be given one week to determine whether it is more likely than not that the documents in question were forged. If CBS does not cooperate, a boycott against both CBS and its major advertisers should be organized.

Correction: The person who e-mailed me, Josh Kollin, writes to say he is not affiliated with boycottcbs.com. He is affiliated with www.rightnation.us, which has been following Forgerygate closely.
