CANADA’S BERNIE KERIK SCANDAL

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 16, 2005 10:50 AM

Well, sort of. From BBC News:

Canada’s immigration minister Judy Sgro has resigned over allegations that she agreed to help a pizza shop owner avoid deportation in return for free food.

Harjit Singh says he delivered free pizza and garlic bread to Ms Sgro and up to 16 election campaign volunteers.

He says Ms Sgro reneged on the deal and ordered his arrest to “save her job” as another immigration scandal broke.

The other scandal involved separate allegations that Sgro had arranged a temporary residency permit for a Romanian stripper also working on her campaign team. More than 30 immigration officials have been subpoenaed in that case.

Although Sgro resigned, she’s vowing to clear her name so she can return to her post. Open-borders diehards never quit.

Update: Canadian conservative reader Denis L. shares his take on the Sgro scandal…

While the open border/closed border issue is a live one in Canada, this particular scandal has little to do with it. Rather, this story is all about ministerial corruption and abuse of privilege. The Liberal government of Canada has been in power for so long that its ministers tend to have a sense of entitlement wherein demanding political favors and help with election campaigns in return for immigration favors is par for the course.

Canadian democracy is badly broken at this point, mostly due to the arrogance and corruption of the federal Liberal party, and the apathy and indifference of the Canadian public. Frankly, I rejoice in these egregious scandals, as they are the best hope we have up here that people will finally consider the possibility that some other party might actually be able to govern Canada as well as these bozos.

Good luck!
