“CAPTURE AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT DAY”

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 27, 2005 11:56 AM

Conservative students at the University of North Texas staged a protest of President Bush’s upcoming amnesty plan by conducting a “Capture the illegal immigrant” event on their campus:

Numerous NT students exchanged heated arguments Wednesday during the “Capture the Illegal Immigrant Game,” put on by NT’s chapter of the Young Conservatives of Texas. The purpose of the game was to show the organization’s opposition to President Bush’s temporary worker plan.

Around 30 students, mostly Hispanic, began engaging members of the organization in a debate because they felt all the facts were not being properly presented. “We want to know! We want to know!” the group chanted. “You shouldn’t make a game of these people who suffer for their families,” Kristy Cisneros, Carrolton senior, said. “It’s a mockery”

Three Young Conservatives members walked around campus wearing bright orange t-shirts with the words “Illegal Immigrant” on the front and “Catch me if u can” on the back for the game. People were encouraged to find these members and ask them why the organization does not support Bush’s plan. The plan grants amnesty to immigrants with a job or job offer lasting for three years. The amnesty can be ended if workers do not remain employed, break program rules or break a law.

Participants who caught the “immigrants” were rewarded with a 100 Grand candy bar. Michele Connole, Lewisville junior and Young Conservatives of Texas publicity director, said the purpose of the event was to bring illegal immigration to the forefront of campus debate. “We’re a border state,” Connole said. “We suffer from the draining of our economy.” For the group, the issue of security is another main point against granting amnesty to illegal immigrants…

I think the kids deserve praise for paying attention to the costs of massive illegal immigration, highlighting the negative consequences of another ill-conceived amnesty, and swimming against the GOP elitists open-borders tide.

What I’d recommend is that they take their protest a step further and conduct some additional events:

“Prosecute an illegal alien employer” day

“Protest an illegal alien-abetting bank” day

“Boycott a sanctuary city” day

Lots of blame to go around.
