SALUTE AMERICA’S HEROES

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 31, 2005 11:19 AM

Over the weekend, FOX News business anchor Neil Cavuto interviewed SPC Jose (J.R.) Martinez about the Iraqi elections. Martinez expressed elation over the success of the process and gratitude for his fellow men and women in uniform.

Martinez’s unbridled enthusiasm and love of country captivated me. He is an awe-inspiring spokesman for Salute America’s Heroes, a charity that “helps our severely wounded and disabled veterans and their families rebuild their lives.”

Martinez
was serving in Iraq in the spring of 2003 when the Humvee he was driving hit a landmine. He suffered severe burns to more than 40 percent of his body. Here’s more:

Jose has undergone nearly 30 surgical procedures at the Brooke Army Medical Center ranging from skin grafts to cosmetic surgery. He acknowledges that a terrible experience changed his life forever; it is change for the best. His wounds taught him that a person’s best qualities are not displayed on the outside–it’s what’s inside a person that matters most. Jose has a very positive outlook on life and he is dedicated to using his personal experience–his ongoing recovery–and new opportunities in life as a way to reach out to others to offer inspiration and comfort.

Learn more about Salute America’s Heroes here. Among their important programs are a “Homes for Wheelchair-bound Heroes” fund and a Family Support Network to help arrange housing for relatives visiting wounded soldiers at military hospitals.

A great cause.
