Disarming Hezbollah (and other fairy tales)
We know who armed Hezbollah–Iran and Syria, both of whom, quite disastrously, seem to be getting away scot-free with state-sponsored terrorism in the First Degree.
But who will disarm Hezbollah?
Here’s the UN “plan,” as described by Reuters, which sounds like the climax of an old Keystones Kops two-reeler:
First, there’s the international UN contingent to get on the ground in Lebanon–”providing France provides the backbone for the contingent.” (With French backbone, you know you’re off to a good start.)
Then, there’s the Lebanese army.
“Once the Lebanese army controls most of the south”–poof!–”the aim is to implement a September 2004 resolution, which calls for the disarmament of all militia, such as Hizbollah.
“This is to be done by the Lebanese army, assisted by UN troops. But Lebanon’s defence minister Elias al-Murr said the army would not disarm Hizbollah. France’s foreign minister, Philippe Douste-Blazy said his troops would not do it either.”
Could this have anything to do with Lebanese and French affinity for Hezbollah?
