I said earlier this month that ABC was not going to do the responsible thing and and proactively can her after her “9/11 was an inside job” cheerleading. I was right. Out of ideological sympathy and then cowardice, they let her drag down public discourse further and they let her choose her time and manner of departure.

The question now is: Where will she take her big mouth next?

***

Meanwhile, a special correspondent for MichelleMalkin.com attended the anti-war concert in NYC last night, and sends along these pics and comments:

Steve Earle, who looks like Billy Bob Thornton if Billy Bob really let himself go, kicked things off with his crowd-pleaser “F the FCC”.

Next came Margaret Cho, who isn’t a comedian so much as an activist whose audience happens to express its agreement with her politics by laughing instead of clapping. [Paraphrasing]…

…Cho on federalism: “Bush is pandering by allowing abortion in South Dakota.”

Cho on Brokeback Mountain: (paraphrasing) “Brokeback Mountain makes Christians so mad they could spit. Christians have to learn to swallow it, swallow it! If you spit, you taste it twice…”

…Next was Fischerspooner, which seems to be some sort of techno Vegas act. Lots of eye makeup, costumes, dancers onstage — sort of a throwback to David Bowie. They did a few songs, the highlight of which was one of their dancers pantomiming being shot and having fake blood squirt out of his chest and mouth.

After Fischerspooner, out came Susan Sarandon to introduce Mama Moonbat.

Cindy came out to thunderous applause, grinning ear to ear, her arms triumphantly in the air:

…[S]he began with the same old same old by insisting that Bush “lied” to us about Saddam’s WMDs. Then things got interesting: she acknowledged that 9/11 was a “criminal act,” and said we should have treated it like a criminal act and not gone and invaded “two innocent countries.” Which is a pretty radical way, even for her crowd, to describe Afghanistan under the Taliban. She said Bush’s motto has become, “We have to kill more people because I’ve already killed so many.” Then she said that a certain right-wing journalist “from Fox News” (loud boos) had asked her earlier that day about Casey’s tombstone, and that she had two responses to that: (a) it’s none of your business, and (b) there are people lying in swamps in America’s gulf states (because of Katrina) who will never have tombstones, there are people who died on 9/11 who will never have tombstones — “all because of George Bush.”

I nearly dropped the camera when she said that.

…[S]he said she doesn’t sing, she doesn’t dance, she doesn’t juggle, BUT: “I am a rock star.” And to prove what a rock star she is, she got the crowd to chant along to the following:

Violence and occupation
Do not bring liberation
That’s bullshit
Get off it
This war is for profit

…Next up was Peaches [after a performance by Moby], who was noteworthy in several ways…She was trying to look sexy, but her outfit reminded me of those women who jump out of cakes at birthday parties.

Second, she co-hosted the meet and greet before the event with Cindy Sheehan. Yeah. Not Stipe, not Steve Earle — Peaches. If you’re wondering why that should seem so odd, take a gander at the lyrics of one of the two songs she sang. She did a little impromptu rewriting during the song [substituting "war" for "pain."] Which was about as complex a political sentiment as was floated all night.

…The one other thing about Peaches worth noting? The crowd loved her. She brought down the house.

After her songs she introduced Chuck D, formerly of Public Enemy, currently of Air America.

The crowd braced itself for a furious performance of Chuck’s signature tune, “Fight the Power,” but no performance was forthcoming. Instead, he started off by noting that only 18% of Americans have passports and then urged everyone to go down to the post office and apply for a passport because the flood of applications would probably alarm Homeland Security and confuse people “at the top.” As if DHS didn’t have enough to deal with, now they have this turd encouraging people to create red herrings for them. As for the $120 passport fee, Chuck said that wasn’t that much, especially if you were willing to forego some other luxury purchase like “spinning rims.” Then he called Bush the “village idiot” and plugged Air America. So in short, to “fight the power” in 2006 is to go down to the post office and apply for a passport that you don’t need. Clenched-fist salute, Chuck!

Last act was the disembodied skull known as Michael Stipe, who talked about how his father had served in the military under three presidents and his grandfather had served in WWII, and how he remembers signing up for the draft when he came of age. He said he was “so proud of the veterans of this country.”

Then the music started. Everyone was waiting for him to do “Everybody Hurts,” but instead he played two slow, boring, crappy songs no one had ever heard of. You could feel the oxygen leave the room from the buzzkill. He introduced the last song with a quote from Dante about how the darkest place in hell is reserved for people who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis. To which all I can say is: one can only hope. Then he did *another* slow, boring, crappy song no one had ever heard of.

The night ended with all the performers and speakers being invited back on stage to wave.

The freaks come out at night.

***

Karol at Alarming News, who also attended the concert, has much more.

Convicted murderer Stanley “Tookie” Williams, the co-founder of the violent Crips gang who is on Death Row in California, is Hollyweird’s current cause celebre. He is scheduled to be executed on Dec. 13 after 24 years of legal wrangling. The San Francisco Chronicle reports today that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has decided to hold a clemency hearing Dec. 8.

Among the Save Tookie brigades: Snoop Dogg, Bianca Jagger, Jesse Jackson, Margaret Cho, Mike Farrell, Jason Alexander, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Glover, Anjelica Huston, Bonnie Raitt, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, and Noah Wyle.

I wrote about Williams’ bleeding-heart worshipers back in 2000, when he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize:

San Quentin prison officials report that juvenile delinquents idolize Williams. His propaganda has been endorsed by the Congressional Black Caucus. As part of an ongoing public relations campaign to soften his image while he ties up the courts with specious legal appeals, Williams has been profiled sympathetically by People magazine, Time, the Los Angeles Times, and the ethnic press. He even appeared on a TV special introduced by President Clinton. Barbara Becnel, a crusading journalist who “edits” Williams’ writings, once gushed that if the death-row inmate had “been raised in Brentwood instead of South Central, he’d be head of the state Democratic party.”

Williams’ groupies would have us believe that their Nobel Peace Prize nominee is a helpless victim of his environment, addled by low self-esteem, forced to turn to violence by racist oppressors, and now apologetic “for the atrocities which I and others committed against our race through gang violence.” Spare us the sob story. Here are the cold-blooded facts missing from Williams’ Nobel Peace Prize application:

Williams was convicted of murdering four innocent bystanders with a sawed-off shotgun in 1979. There was nothing peaceful or compassionate about the way [Albert Owens], Thsai-Shai Yang, Yen-I Yang and Yee Chen Lin died. Owen[s] was a white teen-age clerk at a 7-11 convenience store, shot twice in the back of the head — execution-style — as he lay unarmed on the floor during a hold-up. A witness testified that Williams mocked the gurgling sounds Owen[s] made as he lay dying. “You should have heard the way he sounded when I shot him,” the witness quoted Williams.

The Yangs were Taiwanese immigrants who, along with their daughter Yee Chen Lin, were gunned down during a motel robbery two weeks after Owen[s] died. Half of the daughter’s face was blown off by the shotgun blasts, former L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Robert Martin told me in an interview this week. Williams called them “Buddhaheads,” Martin recounted, and robbed them of petty cash.

Williams has yet to apologize to the victims’ families. When the trial ended, Martin told me, Williams muttered to the prosecution team, “I’ll get every one of you m—–f—–s.”

Spoken like a Nobel laureate.

Tookie Williams was sentenced to die for these brutal crimes in 1981. But at the end of this year, he will have celebrated 19 more Thanksgivings, 19 more Christmases, and 19 more birthdays. That’s 6,935 days more than [Albert Owens], Thsai-Shai Yang, Yen-I Yang and Yee Chen Lin were allowed to enjoy on this earth…

Wayne Owens, Albert’s brother, speaks out here.

Rebecca Owens, Albert’s daughter, weighs in here.

Lora Owens, Albert’s stepmother, writes:

My name is Lora Owens. I am the stepmother of Albert Lewis Owens. My husband, Albert’s father, has died so I also speak for him since we discussed this letter frequently over the years. I am writing you concerning clemency for Stanley “Tookie” Williams who murdered Albert in 1979 by shooting him twice in the back. Within seconds, though Albert pleaded for his life, Williams chose to become the judge, jury and executioner of Albert, then laughed as he lay dying. In 1981, Williams was tried, convicted and sentenced to death for the murders he committed in cold blood. Now the many, many years of appeals have also been denied and the facts remain steadfast and the verdict remains firm.

Now that the appeals have been denied, Williams has decided on a new tactic. A female friend has entered his life who happens to be a journalist who wants to write children’s books against gangs. Since the defense of brain damage in his appeals did not gain him anything, Williams decided to become an articulate author denouncing gang activity. He doesn’t assist the authorities in stopping gang activity by “debriefing” however, but concentrates on teaching primary school age children the “walk and talk” of gang life. This he claims will deter them from joining a gang.

The Nobel Peace Prize nominations, from the first to the last, have been made by activists who see an opportunity to further their personal cause. The first was quoted to have made the nomination to “raise the awareness of the death penalty to a higher degree”. Totally nothing to do with Williams and whether he deserved the recognition but for a political agenda.

This has been true of each nomination since.

They have quoted that it doesn’t matter what he has done in the past but what he is doing now.

I contend that he is not doing anything now to warrant any type of award and it definitely does matter what he has done in the past. It would matter to anyone whose child is dying in a pool of blood because Williams had the loaded gun and chose to shoot- not in self defense-but shot innocent, unarmed victims simply bcause he could.

John and Ken of KFI-AM talk radio in Los Angeles are following the latest twists and turns.

Flap’s Blog is keeping a Tookie Watch. RedState on the impending death of Tookie Williams.

Debra J. Saunders, who has followed the case for years, debunks the Tookie sympathizers’ mythology:

The whole “redemption” line is a joke. As Williams’ former prosecutor Robert Martin once told me, redemption requires an admission of guilt, facing up to what you did and expressing remorse. Williams has done none of the above, yet newspaper editorial pages (including The Chronicle’s) and various do-gooders (including some Ninth U.S. Court of Appeals judges) have been pushing for the governor to grant Tookie clemency.

That would turn the whole concept of clemency on its ear.

Let me stipulate: While I support the death penalty, I can respect those who oppose it. But I can’t respect those who lionize the most violent thugs as if they are prize sages. My advice to the anti-execution crowd — and I have no doubt it will be ignored — is to find some poor schlub who killed in a panic and doesn’t belong on death row, and seek clemency for that person.

Don’t put a cold-blooded killer on a pedestal. Don’t denounce a government killing as barbaric while you laud a cold-blooded thug. And don’t ask for clemency for a killer who won’t fess up to his crimes.

Williams’ co-author, Barbara Becnel, told the Los Angeles Times, “What Stan presents is hope that they, too, can change. He is worth far more to society alive than dead.”

Wrong. He is worth more to society dead. The message from the Tookie-philes is that you can kill innocent people and be a star. An execution says you can kill innocent people and pay the price.

Which message will Gov. Schwarzenegger send?

Stay tuned.

***
Update: Send a message to the Tookie worshipers. Nominate Patterico for a Nobel Peace Prize!

Which is lamer: Comedian Margaret Cho complaining that I’m a racist (what, getting bored of dropping f-bombs on President Bush?) or Philadelphia Daily News columnist Dan Gross parroting her empty smear and calling it journalism?

Gross makes Cho’s ad hominem attack his lead headlined item today and describes me as “a syndicated conservative columnist who appears in the People Paper’s [Phildadelphia Daily News] pages.”

Uh, Mr. Gross, you might want to walk over to the op-ed department of your own newspaper and get your facts straight. Much to the approval of your left-wing audience, my “racist” column hasn’t appeared in your People’s Paper since July.

(An aside: I’m sure Editor and Publisher will be following up…they seem to relish reporting when conservative female columnists get dropped by papers–see here and here–but never when we’re picked up.)

Anyway, fyi, this appears at the end of Gross’s column:

If you have something you’d like to share with Dan, call 215-854-5963, or e-mail grossd@phillynews.com.

Give him the HOT NEWS TIP that his paper canceled my column…three months ago.

Maybe if I had been more of sycophantic stenographer to liberal celebrities, I’d still be carried by the People’s Paper. Oh, well.

The response to this week’s column and blog post giving readers a peek into my e-mailbox was quite unexpected and overwhelming. Yes, I am feelin’ the luuuv. Deepest thanks to all of you for the kind notes, track backs, etc.

Longtime readers know exactly why I reprinted the hate letters–not to elicit sympathy (though I appreciate it very much), but to expose The Myth of the Tolerant Liberals with their own hypocritical and unhinged words.

Some readers note that leftist <s>comedienne</s> <s>entertainer</s> celebrity Margaret Cho received nasty e-mails last year from conservatives angered by her Bush-bashing tirades. They were, indeed, awful, despicable letters and although Ms. Cho and I agree on very, very little, we do seem to share a common ability to intimidate some weird segment of the population that has a problem with outspoken, opinionated women of Asian heritage. (I should also note that while Cho received contrite apologies from some of her hate e-mailers, I have received none and expect none.)

There will always be idiots out there mocking prominent public figures’ ethnicity, physical appearance, sexuality, etc. But the key difference between Cho’s hate mail and mine is profound. None of her detractors accused her of selling out her race. And unlike me, she is beloved by the Asian-American elite. No minority who embraces liberal ideas is attacked for being a “race traitor.” That unique ad hominem accusation is borne only by minority conservatives, and it has become an expedient substitute for arguing with the actual substance of our ideas. Margaret Cho herself engages in this empty tactic against me here.

Coincidentally, the always incisive Dr. Thomas Sowell, who knows more than just about anyone about the burdens of being a “race traitor,” takes on the decline of discourse in his latest column. Here’s an excerpt:

My assistant sorts the incoming mail into various categories, such as “critical mail,” “fan mail,” etc. But the so-called critical mail is seldom critical. It may be bombastic or vituperative or full of pop psychology, but it seldom presents a critical argument based on facts or logic.

Too many people today act as if no one can honestly disagree with them. If you have a difference of opinion with them, you are considered to be not merely in error but in sin. You are a racist, a homophobe or whatever the villain of the day happens to be.

Disagreements are inevitable whenever there are human beings but we seem to be in an era when the art of disagreeing is vanishing. That is a huge loss because out of disagreements have often come deeper understandings than either side had before confronting each other’s arguments…

Indeed.

The bitter, twisted, unfunny skit on Saturday Night Live that’s mentioned on the Drudge Report this morning can be viewed here. In addition to cruelly mocking Rush Limbaugh, the cartoon (titled “Blue Christmas”) shows Santa and Rudolph skipping over the Red States (referred to on a map as Dumbf*ckistan), commiserating at a Chinese restaurant with Al Franken, Natalie Merchant, Moby, and Margaret Cho, and then taunting a little girl as a religious bigot for believing in God.

There’s the liberal holiday spirit for you. Pathetic losers.

Update: Some readers are rapping me for not getting it. Here’s a sample:

I just viewed the SNL clip you referred to. I think you are missing the point. The cartoon is (to me) a fairly obvious knock at liberals who excoriate red staters. The only actual anti-conservative bit is the poke at Rush Limbaugh’s drug use which, if valid, is a fair attack on an aspect of his life about which he used to be hypocritical. I laughed out loud at the video, and view it in the same genre/style/political approach as Team America by the South Park guys. South Park-style humor is not for everyone, and many just don’t “get it” because the grossness and intentionally over the top nature of the jokes turn them off. That’s okay. But trust me, the SNL piece was not an anti-liberal thing; it was just a South Park thing.

Here’s another e-mail from a “radical, right-wing, conservative Baptist deacon:”

Loved the video! Here we have all the liberals shown as bigots being brought to task by an innocent little girl who obviously shows more intelligence and insight than any one of them. And, Al Franken shows that his behavior is driven by the Brookings Institution! After the election, the liberal breakdown still brings happy tears to my eyes!

Cheap shot on Rush but, typical of satire. I don’t know how I would have made it through the Clinton years without it…

And Ace of Spades, one of my favorite bloggers, says to ignore the whole thing.

He’s got a point.
