A year in the life of a blog
This blog turned one last week! (BTW: Congrats to Karol at Alarming News, which turned the Big 3 today.) First, some blogiversary expressions of gratitude: Special thanks to the following people for their warm welcomes, words of advice/encouragement, and early links during mm.com’s incipient days: John, Paul, and Scott at Power Line, John Hawkins at [...]
REMEDIAL ENGLISH
I committed the unforgivable gaffe of using “myself” instead of “me” in my last column, and was glad to catch flak from many eagle-eyed readers. If only one of them had been my editor! Mark Goldblatt at NRO, who teaches remedial English, has a related pop quiz. I missed #7.
TRACKBACK SPAM
Power Line disabled trackbacks after receiving spam from pornographers. We’re beginning to have the same problem here (in many older entries). Let me know what you think I should do.
HAPPY APRIL 15th
At long last, a soak-the-rich tax that liberals want to cut.
QUICK LINKS
Am flying home this morning. Back later. Meantime, here’s some good stuff ’round the blogosphere… Cassandra at Villanous Company takes down Jack Shafer. Tom Maguire takes on Nick Kristof. Blogger radio today: Goldstein and Ardolino host the Citizen Journalist Report on RightTalk at 3pm EST. Guests are the un-retired and unretiring Ace and Fidel Castro’s [...]
FLYING SOLO
Hey all–Back at my hotel in NYC after subbing for John Kasich on “Heartland.” Was honored to fill in for him. The Political Teen has video here. (Highlights at Trey Jackson.) The show hummed along pretty smoothly until the end, I thought, especially for an ink-stained wretch like me getting used to the hosting thing. [...]
WELCOME, O’REILLY VIEWERS
Welcome to my blog. If you are new to blogs, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy. My site is updated several times throughout the day (and into the night…I’m an incurable insomniac) with links to news items, analysis, original reporting, and occasional offbeat and personal posts. Keep scrolling down and also check out the [...]
MY P2P POST SPAWNS AN IMITATOR
Picking up where I left off in this post, Rob Sama uses P2P to find an Excel spreadsheet containing 13 names, addresses, salaries and social security numbers. “Not a bad grab for about 5 minutes of work,” Sama notes.
“I SHALL NOT DIE…”
1 O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever! 2 Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures for ever.” 16 the right hand of the LORD is exalted, the right hand of the LORD does valiantly!” 17 I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the [...]
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES
Hey, kids. Sorry for going AWOL on you this morning. Site glitches seem to be fixed. Regular blogging will resume shortly…
FAVORITE PART OF THE DAY
Patterico has a touching post about putting his five-year old daughter to bed.
CORRECTION
In this entry, posted February 27, I wrongly said MoveOn compared President Bush to Hitler. The entry has been amended accordingly.
MOMMYBLOGGING: AVATAR PREMIERE
My four-year-old daughter has taken such a liking to Avatar: The Last Airbender that we are now sitting through a second, back-to-back broadcast of the premiere on Nickelodeon. At least it’s an improvement over Mulan 2.
BLOG IMPROVEMENT NOTES
Many readers have complained about the font size on the blog. Thanks to my blog handyman, Mark Jaquith, you can change it now. Scroll down on the left below the blogroll for the font adjuster. We’ve also added a search engine located just below the font adjuster.
WRITTEN IN BLOOD
Remember this poignant account about a man who wrote farewell notes to his wife and kids in blood after being injured during the Glendale train wreck? There’s a follow-up today from the Associated Press, among other media outlets, which covered a press conference held by the blood-writer who survived his injuries: The seriously injured passenger [...]
BLOG IMPROVEMENT NOTES
We’ve done a little nipping and tucking around the site: rolled out some blogads, made some formatting changes, and added Sitemeter. We’ve also fixed the graphics problem discussed here (if anyone still has problems, let me know). Many thanks to Mark Jaquith, who blogs at Tempus Fugit. Mark’s specialty is moving people from Movable Type [...]
THE SNOWY DAY
We got a few inches and the mixing bowl we put out on the deck this morning is now full. My daughter has been dying to make snow ice cream. Be back later. Here’s our recipe… Large bowl full of fresh, clean snow 1 cup of whole milk 1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract 1/2 cup [...]
MOMMYBLOGGING: ENTER THE THUDGUARD-DOME
My 1-year-old son has chunky, wide feet. Barney Rubble feet, I call them. We couldn’t find any shoes at a Certain Unnamed Big Box Store, so we went to the mall yesterday and stopped by over-priced Stride-Rite. Paid $20 for his first “real” sneakers. Which he loves…to gnaw on. Yup, they’re dual-use transportation/teething devices. I [...]
ON AGAIN, OFF AGAIN
Just a quick note to readers asking why they couldn’t access the blog during short periods throughout the day. My web host, Hosting Matters, was doing some maintenance work. Should be smooth sailing from here. Thanks for your patience. Scroll down. Lots of nutritious blogging below.
RED ROOMBA UPDATE
A lot of readers want to know how my Christmas present –the Roomba 4100 Red–is working. So far, so good! I use it on the main level of our house, which has hardwood floors in the dining room, living room, and playroom, and linoleum tile in the foyer and kitchen. You won’t believe how much [...]
ON THE MENU & UNDER THE TREE
What’s for Christmas breakfast: Apple-Cranberry Chutney with Sausages Cinnamon Toast Strata Bacon Potato Frittata What’s under the tree: For the kids – Jump Dancer (yes, I’m going to try it), American Girl doll and accessories (from grandparents), Elmo videos, electronic thingamajigs, etc. etc. etc. For the husband – IOU for his Delphi MyFi, which I [...]
BELIEVING IN MIRACLES
For your early morning reading… TULSA, Okla. An airman home on leave from basic training jumped into the frigid water of the Arkansas River to save a mother and her 2-year-old son after their car lost control and crashed… BATON ROUGE, La.- A McDonald’s worker ran to the rescue of an allegedly drunk driver whose [...]

IT DEPENDS ON THE MEANING OF “GIFT WRAP”
Like an increasing number of gift-givers, we’ve been doing most of our Christmas shopping on Amazon.com. As in past years, there’s an option before you place your order to purchase gift-wrapping for $4.99. Today, this gift for my daughter arrived in its “gift wrap”–a blue burlap sack with a cheap, day-glo green, wrinkled ribbon. Uh-uh-uh-gly! [...]
BOOKS FOR SALE
I’m offering signed books for sale here, and am now set up to accept credit card payments. Orders received by Wednesday December 15th will be delivered before Christmas Day.
ORNAMENTAL THINGS
We bought our first real Christmas tree this year–a six-foot, North Carolina Frasier fir. My four-year-old daughter, a.k.a. Keeper of the Care Bears, claimed the honor of hanging the first decoration: Cheer Bear can stay, but I’m drawing the line at Bratz doll ornaments.
GREETINGS, KVI LISTENERS
Hello to Seattle-area listeners in KVI-land. If you’re coming to purchase signed books during my extended book sale, click here for more info and feel free to make yourselves at home.
HOME IMPROVEMENT BLEG
I am in need of a general contractor to do some work on a basement wall in my home in Montgomery County, Maryland. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks!
BOOK SALE UPDATE
Many thanks to those of you who purchased signed books through last week’s book sale. A $325.00 contribution has been made to Operation Uplink. All the books were shipped yesterday and should reach their destinations by the end of this week.
ARE YOU STILL ALIVE?
Yes, I am breathing…barely! Been sick as a dog and had to travel to Philly for a speaking engagement yesterday to address Daniel Pipes’ terrific Middle East Forum. Had a great time–excellent and engaging conversation with Americans committed personally and professionally to fighting Islamic terrorism at home and abroad. Thanks to all who attended. Both [...]
