[Written by guest blogger emeritus See-Dubya]

Hello—I go by See-Dubya on the web, and I used to guest-blog here for Michelle back in 2008. Then I retired from blogging, but I’m coming back just this once to tell you about my trip to 7-11.

It was actually only near 7-11; I didn’t go in. The parking lot was too crowded. It was raining and it was early in the morning and my windows were fogged up but I pulled in across the street, turned my headlights off, and one of the three or four dozen men who were hanging around the lot (despite the miserable downpour) came out to see me. One little guy in an orange shirt and a ball cap, who looked to be in charge, came up to my window, but I just smiled and waved him off and fooled with my phone. So he smiled and went back to leaning on his truck. I think he thought I wanted to pick up some day labor.

I wasn’t, but hat’s understandable: this particular 7-11 has a reputation as a place to pick up day labor. It has had that reputation for at least ten years, probably longer. Every time I’ve driven by there, there the laborers are. There’s a lot of places like this in America today, probably some of them 7-11s, where day laborers gather in hopes they’ll get picked up for a job.

This particular 7-11 (you can see the sign, and the workers, in the background, through the monsoon) is in Falls Church, Virginia, on the Leesburg Pike, just down the road from the Dar al-Hijrah mosque. Ten years ago, a charismatic imam named Anwar al-Awlaki manned the pulpit there, and a U.S. soldier named Nidal Hasan listened to his sermons in the congregation.

In fact just a little over ten years ago a couple of worshipers from Dar al-Hijrah drove up to this particular 7-11. They weren’t really interested in hiring the day laborers so much as getting someone to help them acquire forged identification. That turned out to be a fellow named Luis A. Martinez-Flores, himself an illegal immigrant, and he walked the two Arabs, Hani Hanjour and Khaled Almidhar, through the process of getting Virginia ID cards—after which they returned to this particular 7-11, withdrew $100 from the ATM, and handed it to Mr. Martinez-Flores.

Around five years ago Michelle went to this particular 7-11. She talked about what had happened there on her then-new website called Hot Air. Her video isn’t there anymore, but it made quite an impression on me. Now that I live in Northern Virginia, every time I drive past that particular 7-11 I point it out to my family. I don’t want them to forget why that particular 7-11 is special. That’s where Hani Hanjour and Khaled Almidhar ten years ago used the ID’s they bought so easily at this day labor bazaar to board American Airlines Flight 77 out of Dulles, and then to take it over and fly it into the Pentagon. They had also, according to Martinez-Lopez’s federal indictment, used these ID’s to procure ID’s in turn for three other 9/11 hijackers. “In all,” notes the 9-11 Commission report, “the five hijackers based their Virginia identification documents on the residency information of one bribed Salvadoran.”

You would think the first thing that the newly-formed Department Homeland Security would have done would be to raid this particular labor market, frequented by illegal aliens and the document fraudsters that enable them to feign legitimacy, and shut it down for good. This is the site of our immigration policy’s greatest, most shameful failure, after all. Of course, ten years on, it’s just business as usual and the shame and failure continue unabated. There’s no marker to commemorate what happened there. You’d never know anything historically significant had happened there ten years ago.

You’d have no indication at that particular 7-11 what a petty, commonplace, wretched little conspiracy was committed, and what a dreadful, monstrous crime was thereby abetted. That was where and when our self-deception about the illegal labor market and the security risks it presents caught up to us. Everyone should know this place. Everyone should vow that what happened there will never be permitted to happen again.

But everyone won’t know; the memory is fading. Like the pictures of the man jumping from the Twin Towers, like the pictures of the rejoicing Middle East, this is one story that you never see in the “respectable” media accounts of what happened a decade ago.

I just drove by there the other day to remind myself. And ten years later it looks like nothing has changed, especially not the policy permitting this market to occur. When Michelle made her video for Hot Air five years ago we were in the midst of debating President Bush’s new policy of amnesty for illegal immigrants, a policy which was just beginning to erode the support of his conservative base. And today the current President has just recently opened yet another door to illegal alien amnesty.

One more thing remained the same: Writing in Human Events about that particular 7-11 in November of 2001, Timothy Carney and Terence Jeffrey noted that Fairfax County police cars often stopped there in the mornings and kept an eye on the crowd. And sure enough, this week, right there in front of that particular 7-11, in the midst of the mob of day laborers (no doubt enjoying Fairfax County’s ongoing status as a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants,) there was parked a Fairfax County police cruiser, just waiting, watching the traffic. Hoping, perhaps, to find some illegal activity going on.

Keep watching! Another ten years, and you may start to see something.

[This post was written and researched on my own time, on my own equipment. Opinions are strictly my own.]

Here we go again. I’ve long reported on the danger of illegal alien sanctuary city policies embraced by woefully misguided (at best) and criminally reckless public officials seeking to appease the open borders lobby. One of the countless casualties of this deadly pandering was Houston PD officer Rodney Johnson, who shot and killed during a traffic stop in 2006 by an previously deported illegal alien protected by Houston’s sanctuary law. His widow, Josyln, continues to speak out against continued non-enforcement policies — and she is livid that the Houston police chief will now be joining the Obama administration:

The widow of a Houston police officer killed by an illegal immigrant said Sunday that the policies left in place in her city by a top immigration official in the Obama administration continue to put officers in danger.

That official, former Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt, is taking a job to oversee partnerships between federal and local officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. However, during his tenure in Houston he resisted enforcing immigration law and criticized ICE’s key program that draws on local law enforcement’s support. Hurtt is now facing a lawsuit over those policies filed by Joslyn Johnson, whose husband, Rodney, was killed in 2006 by a once-deported illegal immigrant who had been arrested three times.

Joslyn Johnson, herself a sergeant in the Houston force, told Fox News that the policies that kept local officers from checking the immigration status of suspects remain in place and pose a risk to her and her colleagues.

“It has remained the same. It has not changed,” Johnson said.

Johnson is suing to seek a change in policy so that federal immigration databases are widely available to local departments. Johnson’s original court petition — naming Hurtt as well as the city and the police department — claimed that the department’s failure to discover the gunman’s immigration status and report him to federal authorities enabled him to stay “at large” in the country.

These open-borders sympathizers endanger us all — and it will only prompt more of an Arizona-style backlash in other states and cities across the country.

“Illegal alien sanctuary” or rule of law community: It’s your choice.

Illegal aliens in Arizona don’t like the new law that requires police officers to question the immigration status of individuals they reasonably suspect might be illegal aliens, and some are leaving.

Other cities and states don’t like it either. I’ve come up with a brilliant idea: let’s raise money to help Arizona’s illegal aliens leave the state to set up house in cities that have passed or are considering boycott resolutions against Arizona. The list of cities includes San Francisco, Los Angeles, Oakland, Austin, Texas (in time for SXSW 2011!), Boston, the nation’s capital, New York City, and Hartford, Connecticut.

We’ll raise funds to send Arizona’s illegals by train, plane, or bus, to a boycotting city—and only a boycotting city—of their choice. Look here…I’ve got my $100 bill ready.

Update: By the way, I’m being sarcastic! I want illegal aliens to leave the country, not just Arizona.

Not forgotten.

The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing yesterday on local enforcement of immigration laws. As the GOP minority pointed out: “Although they’ve given it a creative title, the Democratic majority called this hearing to fulfill its pledge to investigate Sheriff Joe Arpaio. (More on the witch hunt here.) The move follows a petition drive by ACORN, in which the organization asked for a Justice Department investigation. The Democrats did not invite Arpaio to testify. Instead, their witnesses claim to have had their civil rights violated by Arpaio’s officers or other local law enforcement agencies, or have third-hand knowledge of the alleged abuses.”

Ray Tranchant stood against the amnesty mob to force the Democrats to confront the tragic consequences when local law enforcement does not work with federal authorities. You may recall two years ago, his daughter and her best friend were killed by an illegal alien drunk driver in the sanctuary city of Virginia Beach. The killer had been arrested twice prior, but local sanctuary laws prevented local officers from reporting the illegal immigrant to federal authorities. The illegal immigrant who hit the girls’ car at 70mph was severely drunk. While the girls were killed instantly, the illegal immigrant walked away from the accident unharmed.

Here is Mr. Tranchant’s full testimony:

First I want to thank you distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen for allowing me to share my testimony with you. I am not here personally for sympathy, but may offer a couple of solutions to the Elected Officials from my perspective, a man that for 2 years has intensely studied the problems and consequences of lax and opposing Immigration Laws.

Two years ago this week, my 16-year old daughter, Tessa, and her best friend, Ali, were killed as they were sitting at an intersection waiting for a red light to change. They both had their seatbelts on and were doing nothing wrong.

They were wonderful girls with bright futures.

But their lives ended suddenly and unnecessarily when a drunken illegal immigrant hit them at more than 70 miles an hour. Alfredo Ramos, whose blood alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit, didn’t see the girls’ car or the red light and couldn’t because of his intoxication. The crash killed Tessa and Ali instantly. Alfredo Ramos walked away unhurt.

At first, my focus was on mourning my daughter and her friend. Our community, friends and family stood with us, honoring their memories.

But anger and a feeling of betrayal took over when I discovered at the trial that Alfredo Ramos could have been — should have been — deported long before he ran that light. In fact, this accident wasn’t the first time that Alfredo Ramos walked away from a drunken incident. It wasn’t even the second time.

Alfredo Ramos had been arrested twice before — for driving under the influence (DUI) and public intoxication. He had a fake driver’s license from Florida and could not speak English.

But because of Sanctuary policies in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia, nobody – not the judge in a prior DUI case or the police who arrested him in the prior incidents – questioned him about his immigration status. Instead of being deported to his home country, he stayed on the streets of Virginia Beach to drink, drive, and take two innocent lives in a way that displayed a wonton disrespect for the laws of our land.

He seemed invisible to the system. I’m not sure if your American kids or relatives would have had the same opportunity to fail. They probably would have been incarcerated, legitimate license suspended, insurance payments would go through the roof, and they would have had to pay large attorney’s fees. Ramos pays nothing, has no driver’s training, no insurance, no lawyer, no license, and now the American People have to spend approximately $30,000/ year for 40 years ($1,200,000) to rehabilitate – then deport him. The Taxpayers have to pay for it!

The deaths garnered local and national media attention: The Virginia Pilot, The Washington Post, The American Chronicle, MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, and many others wrote and talked about Tessa and Ali.
Their stories shed light on the tragic consequences of lax immigration policies.

Gladly, some important things have changed in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake in the last two years. Virginia Beach now requires that police check the immigration status of all arrested. Virginia Beach and Chesapeake passed measures requiring that companies doing business with the cities pledge not to hire illegal immigrants. Last July, a statewide law took effect which requires local jails to contact federal authorities to check the immigration status of all foreign-born inmates, irrespective of whether they are in the country legally. And, local police officers are working more closely with federal authorities than ever before.

But a threat remains!

Despite recommendations from the state’s Attorney General and the Virginia State Crime Commission, Virginia’s Governor has yet to ask federal authorities for a 287 (g) agreement; and ICE may not have the resources to support such a request. The 287(g) program would allow the state to enter into an agreement with the federal government so that state law enforcement officers can assist in the investigation, apprehension and detention of illegal immigrants. Opponents of 287(g) cite a supposed “chilling effect” on cooperation between immigrant communities and police, the cost of the program, or the potential for racial profiling as reasons to reject it.

As I testify here today, I expect to hear many of these arguments.

While I sympathize with those arguments, I am not compelled. I know about chilling experiences. They happen on the average of twice a month with Illegal Immigrants in America, transparent criminals in a broken system that lets them kill or injure honest citizens.

A family should not have to mourn the death of a loved one just because of an unrelated policy or the political correctness of not offending or inconveniencing a few people. This prevents us from making our communities safer, a Constitutional right to all citizens of the United States.

Newsweek columnist Robert J. Samuelson recently wrote:

“We face a choice between a society where people accept modest sacrifices for a common good or a more contentious society where a group selfishly protect their own benefit.”

I believe this to be true.

Ray Tranchant

Well now.

Turns out Aunti Zeituni Onyango, one of Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama’s many relatives made famous in his memoir, is an illegal alien. And not just a run-of-the-mill illegal alien on welfare.

She’s one of the hundreds of thousands of deportation fugitives — absconders – whom I’ve been reporting on for the past six years. After 9/11, the government vowed to crack down on absconders. They’ve failed abysmally.

Aunti’s story:

Barack Obama’s aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as “Aunti Zeituni” in Obama’s memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango’s case.

Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcment official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.

Just you watch: After sitting silent as Joe The Plumber’s records were rummaged by Ohio government employees, the fairweather privacy rights crowd will wake up and start making noise over this.

QUESTION: Will the Obama campaign return the many donations from this illegal alien?

ANSWER: Not bloody likely.

Federal Election Commission records show that Onyango donated at least five times to her nephew’s campaign in July and September. Three of the donations were for $5 each, and two of the donations were for $25. Records compiled by The Huffington Post show she gave a total of $260 to the campaign.

The law:

It shall be unlawful for a foreign national directly or through any other person to make any contribution of money or other thing of value, or to promise expressly or impliedly to make any such contribution, in connection with an election to any political office; or in connection with any primary election, convention, or caucus held to select candidates for any political office; or for any person to solicit, accept, or receive any such contribution from a foreign national.

2 U.S.C. § 441e.

QUESTION II, from commenter tony4951: “So let me get this straight. Millionaire Obama doesn’t use his wealth to help his poor illegal alien Aunt get out of public housing, but if I complain about Obama wanting to raise my taxes to ’spread the wealth around’ I’m the selfish one?”

Exactly.

Meanwhile, the AP tries to downplay Aunti’s deportation evasion and defiance of a judicial ruling:

Onyango’s refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, non-criminal violation of U.S. immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system.

As I’ve pointed out countless times since 9/11, systemic immigration loopholes and deportation failures that have benefited peaceful illegal aliens have also benefited illegal aliens with nefarious intent.

Reminder from 2004:

…the system for screening out the well-meaning from the menaces is completely overwhelmed. Claims of “credible fear of persecution” are almost impossible to document, but are rarely rejected. Federal homeland security officials are unable to detain asylum seekers for background checks without the civil liberties brigade screaming “racial profiling.” And there is still a woeful shortage of detention space— just 2,000 beds nationwide— to hold those with suspect claims.

As a result, thousands of refugees and asylum seekers who have made flimsy claims of persecution are let loose. As the Department of Justice’s Inspector General reported, 97 percent of all asylum-seekers from any country who were released from immigration custody were never found again and deported.

…Ramzi Yousef landed at New York City’s JFK airport from Pakistan and flashed an Iraqi passport without a visa to inspectors. He was briefly detained for illegal entry and fingerprinted, but was allowed to remain in the country after invoking the magic words “political asylum.” The then-INS released him because it didn’t have enough space in its detention facility. Yousef headed to Jersey City to plot the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Gazi Ibrahim Abu Mezer, a Palestinian bomb-builder, entered the U.S. illegally through Canada in 1996 and 1997. He claimed political asylum based on alleged persecution by Israelis, was released on a reduced $5,000 bond posted by a man who was himself an illegal alien, and then skipped his asylum hearing after calling his attorney and lying about his whereabouts. In June 1997, after his lawyer withdrew Mezer’s asylum claim, a federal immigration judge ordered Mezer to leave the country on a “voluntary departure order.” Mezer ignored the useless piece of paper. He joined a New York City bombing plot before being arrested in July 1997 after a roommate tipped off local police.

Mir Aimal Kansi, convicted in 1997 of capital murder and nine other charges stemming from his January 1993 shooting spree outside the CIA headquarters in McLean, Virginia, also exploited our insane asylum laxity. Despite his history as a known Pakistani militant who had participated in anti-American demonstrations abroad, Kansi received a business visa in 1991. After arrival, he claimed political asylum based on his ethnic minority status in Pakistan. While his asylum application was pending, he obtained a driver’s license and an AK-47, murdered two CIA agents, and wounded seven others.

And we’re still not serious about tightening up the system and enforcing the law.

Lucky for Aunti, the open-borders Bush administration has just issued a special pre-election directive to slow down any deportation efforts that might get her kicked out of the country:

Onyango’s case — coming to light just days before the presidential election — led to an unusual nationwide directive within Immigrations and Customs Enforcement requiring any deportations prior to Tuesday’s election to be approved at least at the level of ICE regional directors, the U.S. law enforcement official told the AP.

The unusual directive suggests that the Bush administration is sensitive to the political implications of Onyango’s case coming to light so close to the election.

Lucky for Aunti, both presidential candidates support shamnesty in one form or another.

Lucky for Aunti, the deportation abyss has not been repaired.

Lucky for Aunti, the congressional practice of creating “special relief” bills to help individual deportation fugitives escape punishment and get rewarded with citizenship is alive and well.

And lucky for Aunti, anyone who thinks she should face the music and get the boot is considered a “hater” and a “xenophobe” and a RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACIST.

Lucky for Aunti, she can always take up shelter in a sanctuary-offering, rule-of-law defying church.

And guess where a left-wing church has openly broken the law and taken in illegal aliens?

Yeah. That’s right: Chicago.

***

Via cjburch, this Ace of Spades commenter sums it all up: “Obama’s aunt is here ILLEGALLY living in poverty, and is a deportation FUGITIVE. She’s collecting WELFARE and has DONATED to Obama’s campaign, ILLEGALLY! Obama. Family in poverty as he makes millions. Complete lawlessness. Giveaway your hard earned tax payer money to illegal fugitives. CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN.”

Good questions:

Did someone from the campaign tell her to keep quiet?

Why was BHO letting her illegally redistribute her wealth to him, when he could have been helping her by getting her an immigration lawyer? If BHO had gotten her a lawyer, could they have appealed? Why then didn’t BHO help her out? When is he going to introduce an emergency private relief bill to give her a green card?

There are a lot of people who have forgotten about the heinous Newark schoolyard killings last year. (Background links.)

I haven’t.

And neither have law enforcement authorities and prosecutors in New Jersey, who have worked hard over the past year to bring the MS-13-linked barbarians to justice.

Six indictments were handed down today. And officials are now formally acknowledging the illegal alien gang ties and motivations behind the brutal crimes:

Prosecutors said for the first time today that the slayings of three college students in a Newark schoolyard last year had a “strong gang component” that was downplayed at the time for fear of inflaming the city.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has said for months that some of the defendants had links to the MS-13 street gang but that their status may not have played a role in the robbery and murder of the victims.

But prosecutors said today that gang membership was clearly a motive in the killings, although they stopped short of calling it the prime motive and would not say it was a gang initiation.

“Certainly there was a strong gang component underlying each of these crimes,” said Thomas McTigue, Essex County assistant prosecutor.

McTigue said none of the defendants was charged under state gang statutes in the 19-count indictment returned today, but he said his office would introduce evidence of gang motivation in the prosecution.

The indictment brought charges of murder, robbery, weapons offenses and other crimes against Rodolfo Godinez, 25; his 17-year-old brother, Alexander Alfaro; Jose Lachira Carranza, 29; Melvin Jovel, 19; Shahid Baskerville, 16; and Gerardo Gomez, 16.

The four students were hanging out behind Mount Vernon School on Aug. 4, 2007, when they were confronted by their attackers with a handgun and a machete. Three of the victims — Terrance Aeriel, 18, Dashon Harvey, 20, and Iofemi Hightower, 20 — were killed when they were lined up against the wall and shot in the back of the head. Terrance’s sister, Natasha Aeriel, survived after being shot in the face and left for dead.

All of the victims were robbed, and Aeriel and the group’s other female, Iofemi Hightower, were sexually molested and cut with machetes and knives, according to a lawsuit recently filed against the city school system and the alleged killers.

You’ll recall that Carranza was an illegal alien out on bail
on child abuse charges. Victim Dashon Harvey’s dad decried the sanctuary climate:

“This is one that slipped through the cracks. He’s an illegal alien,” said outraged dad James Harvey, whose son Dashon was murdered last Saturday, along with Terrance Aeriel and Iofemi Hightower.

While 28-year-old day laborer Jose Lachira Carranza was behind bars yesterday, prosecutors arrested a third suspect, who is 15 years old, in Morristown, and charged him with felony murder.

Another 15-year-old has also been charged.

Harvey said that Carranza, the alleged ringleader, “should never have been out in the first
place.”

“He’s got child abuse charges. He’s got a weapon. It’s an outrage to the justice system and the community that he’s out.”

Yet, to point out these deadly lapses is to invite spittle-flecked accusations of racism from open-borders zealots.

Eternal shame on them.

"Hernandez has been arrested 16 times in five years in Colorado but apparently has never been deported, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records."

How many times do I have to ask: How many more tragedies like this need to occur before Americans finally hold illegal alien sanctuary enablers responsible for their reckless, deadly neglect?

Lord have mercy. One of the victims was a 3-year-old child enjoying ice cream at Baskin-Robbins:

As new questions arose about the man police say is responsible for the tragedy, several hundred friends and relatives gathered Saturday night outside an ice cream shop to mourn three lives suddenly lost.

“It hurts now,” said Vito Kudlis, surrounded by friends as he and his wife, Enely, wept for their 3-year-old son, Marten. “It is freaky. It is crazy.”

Marten, Patricia Guntharp, 49, of Centennial and Debra Serecky, 51, of Aurora all died when a Thursday night collision caused vehicles to careen into the Baskin-Robbins at the corner of South Havana Street and East Mississippi Avenue.

Saturday night, they were remembered in a candlelight vigil. Small children held glow sticks as others added stuffed animals — especially bears — to a memorial.

Francis Hernandez, the man being held for suspicion of vehicular homicide in the deaths, is now being detained by federal immigration officials.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials sent a faxed detainer on Hernandez, 23, at 12:04 a.m. Saturday, indicating his U.S. citizenship is under question, according to Arapahoe County jail officials and federal authorities.

Hernandez has been arrested 16 times in five years in Colorado but apparently has never been deported, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records.

Watch the revolving door go ’round and ’round:

Hernandez had been arrested in Denver as recently as July 18 on a traffic stop and charged with numerous crimes, including resisting police, CBI records say. Had he been held on an ICE detainer at that time, he would have been jailed until his case was completed and his sentence served and then deported, a time-consuming process.

Hernandez is now being held on the ICE detainer and for investigation of three counts of vehicular homicide, reckless driving and hit and run in Thursday night’s accident, Aurora police spokesman Lt. John Sopranuk said…

…Dating back to 2003, Hernandez has been arrested for mostly misdemeanor offenses 16 times by police officers in Denver, Longmont, Aurora, Westminster, Lakewood and Broomfield and sheriff’s deputies in Boulder, Gilpin and Arapahoe counties, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records. His charges have included forgery, assault, theft, fraud and driving under restraint.

Sopranuk said Friday that Hernandez was born in California and is a U.S. citizen.

But he added that detectives could find no indication that he had ever held a driver’s license in California or Colorado.

Also according to CBI records, Hernandez, who has 11 aliases and two listed birth dates, has four listed birth places, including Mexico.

ICE placed a detainer because of indications he was born outside the country, said

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and other Bay Area liberal lawmakers continue to look the other way at the victims of bloody illegal alien sanctuary policies.

The San Francisco 49ers football team, however, isn’t just sitting on the sidelines:

The surviving family members of the father and two brothers who were fatally shot earlier this year will be honored by the San Francisco 49ers before the team’s game Sunday.

The team wouldn’t divulge specifics about the engagement, but acknowledged that relatives of Tony Bologna, 49, Michael, 20, and Matthew ,16, would be participating in a pregame ceremony that pays tribute to the hardships they’ve endured following the slayings, 49ers spokesman Pete Hillan said.

The surviving son in the family, a recent graduate of Lincoln High School, will throw out the ceremonial “first pass” before the 49ers take the field against the Arizona Cardinals at 1:15 p.m. Sunday…The three Bologna men were shot June 22 in The City’s Excelsior neighborhood. Edwin Ramos, 21, an alleged MS-13 gang member (ed.: and illegal alien), is accused by prosecutors of killing the men after mistaking them for rival gang members.

Thank you, 49ers, for refusing to look the other way. Thank you for organizing the community in honor of the Bologna family. Thank you for keeping the memory of these three innocent victims alive. The San Francisco liberal establishment has blood on its hands. Don’t ever let them forget.

Sick and tired of sanctuary.

Widow Daniella Bologna, whose husband and two sons were murdered by an illegal alien sanctuary beneficiary in San Francisco, is fighting back. She needs all the help she can get. I’ve reported on several lawsuits like this one over the past 10 years, and so far government officials have been able to evade accountability.

Let’s hope we get the change the victims of illegal alien sanctuary deserve. The details:

The city of San Francisco is partially responsible for the fatal shooting of a father and his two sons by a gang member who was shielded from deportation by the city’s “extreme” immigration sanctuary policy, the slain family’s attorney said in a claim filed Friday.

Tony Bologna, 48, and his two sons, 20-year-old Michael and 16-year-old Matthew, were gunned down at an intersection in June. Police arrested Edwin Ramos, a native of El Salvador, who they say mistook the Bolognas for rival gang members.

Ramos has been charged with three counts of murder and is awaiting trial. He has pleaded not guilty.
The claim states that the city knew Ramos was a member of Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, with a violent past, but failed to report him as required by federal law to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

The claim alleges the city knew Ramos “would likely murder men simply because they appeared to be Latino or African American.”

“When a city is violating federal law and that violation of law leads to horrific consequences like this, then the city has clearly acted in a negligent manner,” said one of the Bologna’s attorneys, Kris Kobach, an immigration law professor at University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Law.

Kobach, who also served as former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft’s chief adviser on immigration law and border security, said San Francisco’s “extreme” sanctuary policy for illegal immigrants essentially bars police from contacting federal authorities when they arrest an illegal immigrant.

Ramos, 21, had been arrested as a juvenile for assault and attempted robbery, but was not deported because the city’s juvenile justice system did not report him to federal immigration officials.

Matt Dorsey, a spokesman for City Attorney Dennis Herrera, said the office had not yet reviewed the claim, so would not comment.

Nancy Pelosi had no comment on this latest illegal alien sanctuary travesty. Keep burying your heads in the hand, San Francisco:

An immigrant suspected of being in the United States illegally – freed after being shielded from possible deportation by San Francisco officials despite committing two gang-related assaults as a juvenile – faces charges that he tried to stab a man to death last year in San Mateo County, authorities say.

The case of Eric Antonio Uc-Cahun, now 19, a native of Mexico, is the second in which a youthful offender protected from deportation in San Francisco has later been arrested for a violent crime as an adult.

The San Mateo County stabbing was especially vicious, authorities said – a top prosecutor said the victim had been “gutted, like you gut a pig.”

Uc-Cahun’s history of youth offenses in the city was similar to that of Edwin Ramos, a 21-year-old Salvadoran native facing triple-murder charges in connection with the slayings in June of a San Francisco man and two of his sons on an Excelsior district street.

“How many of these people are there who were the beneficiaries of this process?” asked Joseph Russoniello, the U.S. attorney for Northern California, who has been critical of the city’s practice of shielding immigrants from deportation.

“This is what happens when the best intentions are misapplied,” Russoniello said. “If there was any justification for this program, cases like this certainly undermine that expectation.”

Both Uc-Cahun and Ramos were in San Francisco’s juvenile justice system at least twice during Mayor Gavin Newsom’s time in office, Ramos for an assault and an attempted robbery he committed when he was 17, Uc-Cahun in connection with assaults and other crimes for which he was arrested in 2006.

Juvenile justice officials protected both Ramos and Uc-Cahun from federal authorities under their interpretation of San Francisco’s sanctuary law, which bars the city from cooperating in U.S. efforts to hunt down illegal immigrants.

Guess the city doesn’t think it has enough blood on its hands yet. Via Jaxon Van Derken at the SF Chron:

A San Francisco city commission has taken a defiant stand against Mayor Gavin Newsom’s directive on young immigrant felons by urging officials to permit the offenders to remain in the city and help pay for their housing, job placement services and immigration lawyers.

Newsom announced last month – in an attempt to quell a growing controversy involving San Francisco’s sanctuary city policy – that the city would no longer shield young illegal immigrant felony offenders from federal authorities for possible deportation.

Three weeks later, the city’s little-known, 15-member Immigrant Rights Commission approved a resolution that ran counter to the mayor’s directive, urging the city to let young immigrant offenders stay in the city. The commission advises the Board of Supervisors and mayor about issues involving immigrants.

It called on San Francisco to pay nonprofit community groups to screen juvenile offenders to determine whether they should be entitled to city-paid immigration attorneys who would help them seek asylum as victims of abandonment, trafficking or abuse.

It also urged the city to provide adequate resources for placing the youths in “culturally appropriate” community programs approved by the juvenile court system, a policy that federal prosecutors have said was akin to harboring illegal immigrants.

And it advised the city to develop and expand safe housing, jobs and other opportunities for unaccompanied immigrant youth “because these youth are extremely vulnerable to exploitation by adult criminals.”

"We're not going to essentially roll back the welcome mat"--until it's politically convenient.

The free local <del datetime="2008-08-15T16:56:11+00:00">fishwrap</del> paper has a smoochy interview with Gerry Connolly, the Democratic candidate for a Northern Virginia congressional race, today. I’ve been watching Connolly for a while and he’s a big liberal–far too liberal even for one of the bluer ends of Virginia.

In the Fairfax Chronicle interview he’s wayyy left on a lot of issues–for example, hand-holding diplomacy with Iran. BUT all of a sudden he might not want you to know how liberal he is on one particular issue:

On immigration, Connolly said that securing our borders and stopping the flow of illegal immigrants must be a top priority of the next Congress; however, enforcement is only part of the solution. He said, “As a local government official, I’ve had to deal with the effects of our failed federal immigration system. That system is broken from top to bottom and needs wholesale reform.”

As Michelle might say, snorty-snort-snort-snort.

As Fairfax County supervisor, Connolly drove Fairfax County’s sanctuary policy for illegal immigrants. If he wants to fix the faults in the system, he can look in the mirror. Here’s Connolly last year:

“I can just tell you Fairfax County is not going to go the route of some of our neighbors. We’re not going to demagogue. We’re not going to essentially roll back the welcome mat.”

Oh, if you’re wondering why he’s not trumpeting his liberal policies on the immigration issue like he is with the others, here’s a clue.

In case you were wondering, Connolly’s Republican opponent, Keith Fimian, maintains a website here.

Last week, I noted the most recent open-borders insanity in Los Angeles– a proposed ordinance requiring private retailers to set aside space for illegal alien day laborers. Well, the full city council has gone ahead and passed the rule…unanimously:

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Wednesday requiring certain home improvement stores to develop plans for dealing with day laborers who congregate nearby in search of jobs.

The ordinance mandates that proposed big-box stores obtain conditional-use permits, which could then require them to build day-labor centers with shelter, drinking water, bathrooms and trash cans.

Councilman Bernard C. Parks, who first proposed the ordinance four years ago, said that this was just the first phase and that he planned to address existing home improvement stores next. He said the businesses needed to be held accountable for their role in attracting dayworkers.

The vote prompted a standing ovation by dozens of day laborers in the council chambers. The move came after years of debate and negotiations among city leaders, Home Depot officials and dayworker advocates over who should be responsible for public safety and nuisance issues created by workers gathered in parking lots and on sidewalks and street corners.

“This is an important day,” said Councilman Eric Garcetti. “This is an example for the nation.”

Yeah. An example of the continued, bone-headed recklessness of illegal alien sanctuary zealots who continue to subsidize and sponsor systemic undermining of our immigration laws, sovereignty, and security.

Guilty on all counts.

You remember the horrible schoolbus accident in Cottonwood, MN that resulted in the deaths of these four beautiful kids:

The remorseless illegal alien driver responsible for wreaking this bloody havoc was convicted on all 24 counts. You’ll remember that she lied to police, telling them she was from Mexico, and blamed the accident on her boyfriend:

In the end, a Kandiyohi County jury believed that Olga Franco was behind the wheel of a van when it plowed into a loaded Cottonwood school bus nearly six months ago, killing four students and injuring 17.

The 24-year-old Guatemalan native, who had claimed that her boyfriend was driving the van, showed no emotion when the verdict was read — guilty on all 24 counts, including criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular injury. Family members of the victims wept quietly as the verdict was read about 10 p.m.

Over more than four days of testimony from crash experts and other witnesses, the jurors had been faced with one central question: Had Franco been driving the van that plowed into the bus on Feb. 19?

Even if they had determined that Franco wasn’t behind the wheel and had acquitted her, she hadn’t been expected to walk out of the courthouse. She still faces federal identity theft charges and was likely to be deported because authorities say she is in the country illegally.

After the verdict, David Javens, grandfather of two of the children killed in the crash, Hunter and Jesse Javens, emerged from the courtroom smiling.

“It’s what we were waiting for, I guess,” he said.

"Cultural affirmation."

You might ask yourself: Could the illegal alien sanctuary debacle in San Francisco get any worse?

Any worse than the triple murder of an innocent father and his two sons at the hands of an illegal alien sanctuary beneficiary?

Any worse than the callousness with which San Francisco government officials have treated the grieving, devastated widow of the murder victims who would be alive today if not for the city’s bloody open-borders policies?

Any worse than the taxpayer-funded, law-undermining illegal alien shuttle service the felonious city was running for young Honduran illegal alien crack dealers?

Any worse than the illegal alien dumping program San Francisco created to ship convicted illegal alien drug dealders/deportation evaders down to San Bernardino County, where they were enrolled in juvenile group homes–only to walk out scot-free and disappear?

Any worse than the news that even more Central American illegal alien criminals escaped those homes after the program was exposed?

Yes, my friends.

Yes, it does get worse.

Ace San Francisco Chronicle reporter Jaxon Van Derbeken remains on the case with another appalling new report today on how proud illegal alien sanctuary proponent SF mayor Gavin Newsom showered $650,000 of public funds on illegal alien felons to provide them with legal services and “cultural affirmation” through open-borders non-profits. Blood pressure alert:

As San Francisco’s juvenile justice system shielded young illegal immigrant felons from possible deportation, Mayor Gavin Newsom’s office gave grants totaling more than $650,000 to nonprofit agencies to provide the underage offenders with free services – everything from immigration attorneys to housing assistance to “arts and cultural affirmation activities,” city records show.

Newsom has said the city began its policy of not referring young immigrant offenders to federal authorities for deportation under previous mayors, and that he reversed the practice after he became aware of it this year. However, in 2006, the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice – a community outreach arm of Newsom’s office – created a grant program specifically designed to assist, rather than deport, “undocumented, unaccompanied and monolingual” immigrants who were in the custody of the city’s Juvenile Probation Department or on juvenile probation, according to city documents.

The city provided $467,000 to three nonprofit agencies under the grant program from mid-2006 and mid-2008, records show, and another $200,000 was approved for two of the agencies for this budget year.

Newsom’s office created the program, in part, to deal with an influx of Central American youths being housed on drug charges at San Francisco’s juvenile hall, according to those familiar with the grant. Crowding at juvenile hall had led to protests among youth advocate groups.
“A key goal of this project is to assist these individuals to successfully navigate the juvenile justice system and achieve stability within the community setting,” according to a 2006 invitation issued by Newsom’s office for agencies to bid for grant money.

The grant language said the youths “require extensive support” to overcome “multiple complex barriers” in the justice system.

Money for the effort came from the pot of discretionary funding that the mayor’s office receives each year as part of the city budget.

The goal of the grant program, according to the request for bids, was to further the city’s “proud tradition as a haven for immigrants.”

In addition to immigration attorneys, Newsom’s office envisioned the program helping young felons obtain housing, food, clothing, educational and vocational training, English-language instruction, medical care and mental health assessments.

The program would also provide “spiritual, cultural enrichment and recreation activities.”

How about those San Francisco values, Nancy Pelosi? Hello? Nancy?
