A computer simulation of the 2001 World Trade Center attacks supports a federal agency’s findings that the initial impact from the hijacked airplanes stripped away crucial fireproofing material and that the weakened towers collapsed under their own weight.

The two-year Purdue University study, funded in part by the National Science Foundation, was the first to use 3-D animation to provide visual context to the attacks, said Christoph Hoffmann, a professor of computer science and one of the lead researchers on the project.

“One thing it does point out… is the absolute essential nature of fireproofing steel structures,” Hoffmann told The Associated Press. “This is something that wasn’t done originally in the World Trade Center when it was built. It wasn’t code at that time.”

Mete Sozen, a professor of structural engineering and a lead investigator on the simulation, said Purdue researchers hope their work leads to better structural design and building codes to prevent similar collapses.

“In the unfortunate development that we shall have to design structures to survive such events, the methods we have developed and will be developing will be of great use to designers,” Sozen said.

The animation, intended in part to help engineers design safer buildings, begins with a map of lower Manhattan as it appeared on Sept. 11, 2001. The video then shows a plane slicing through several stories of the World Trade Center’s north tower and follows the disintegrating plane through the interior and out the opposite side.

The report concludes that the weight of the aircraft’s fuel, when ignited, produced “a flash flood of flaming liquid” that knocked out a number of structural columns within the building and removed the fireproofing insulation from other support structures, Hoffmann said.

The simulation also found that the airplane’s metal skin peeled away shortly after impact and shows how the titanium jet engine shafts flew through the building like bullets.

On “The View,” Rosie’s unpredictable nature kicked the show’s ratings up about 18 percent since last year and moved it to fifth place among daytime talk shows, from its longtime 10th place perch.

The jump translated into about a 15 percent ad-rate increase – a shift that contributed millions to the show’s bottom line, says an ABC staffer.

“That’s big,” said Mediaweek’s Marc Berman. “Especially when you consider that nine out of 10 daytime shows are down in the ratings.”

All of that came because of, or despite, Rosie’s various feuds, ranging from public spats with Donald Trump and Asian-American organizations to conspiracy-theory talk about 9/11.

“I would say that Rosie clearly helped electrify ‘The View’ and has positioned herself nicely to enter into discussions with several syndicators,” said John Rash of media-buying firm Campbell Mithun.

Wherever she lands, and some industry experts believe a new show could debut as soon as 2009, O’Donnell has a proven Midas touch with TV.

“The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” a feel-good, entertainment-oriented talker, generated hundreds of millions for producer Warner Bros. during its six seasons, which concluded in 2002.

O’Donnell walked away with a cool $40 million by the end of her Warner Bros. deal.

I said earlier this month that ABC was not going to do the responsible thing and and proactively can her after her “9/11 was an inside job” cheerleading. I was right. Hoisted by her own petard for her Asian language mimickry, diva of political correctness Rosie O’Donnell is getting blasted by a Chinese-American NYC city councilman for offending minorities:

A city councilman is demanding that Rosie O’Donnell be held accountable for comments she made on ABC’s “The View” last week that he said offended Asian-Americans.

O’Donnell set off a firestorm when she mocked Chinese broadcasters commenting on Danny DeVito’s drunken Nov. 29 performance on “The View.”

“The fact is that it’s news all over the world. You know, you can imagine in China it’s like, ‘Ching chong, ching chong, Danny DeVito, ching chong chong chong chong, drunk, ‘The View,’ ching chong.’”

O’Donnell’s imitation was followed by laughter from her co-hosts and a loud “gong” that producers threw in.

City Councilman John Liu (D-Queens) has written a letter to Barbara Walters, co-executive producer and co-host of “The View,” blasting O’Donnell.

“Her caricature of the Chinese language hits a raw nerve in our community,” Liu wrote.

Liu admonished Walters for sitting by and not scolding O’Donnell for making the “derogatory remarks” that “have consequences beyond the stupidity of the person who made them.”

“What will you do to hold yourself and those who host the program accountable for such offensive remarks?” Liu asked Walters.

It’s one of the rare times I am enjoying the P.C. circus at work. Very edifying. I hope they go all out: Pickets, advertising boycotts, the works. Couldn’t happen to a better (er, worse) person.

A viewer at YouTube notes that O’Donnell did her same “ching-chong” routine in on her own show in response to Mira Sorvino stating that she majored in Chinese. Apparently, Rosie thinks it’s so brilliant and funny, she’s promising to do it again. More from her blog:

Even more damning: The entire cast and audience of oh-so-progressive and enlightened women laughing along at Rosie’s mockery of Chinese. Her sanctimonious left-wing schtick is sending ratings through the roof.

Perhaps someone should mock a View discussion by replacing Rosie’s voice with the squealing of a pig. It’s certainly what I envision when I see her opening her mouth:

“Oink oink oink homophobe oink grunt snort Kelly Ripa oink oink I hate Bush oink oink The View oink snort oink.”

Remember the special fun project I mentioned yesterday? Well, what if we took The View and reversed the formula (three conservatives and one liberal instead of three liberals and one conservative), turned down the screeching, and demonstrated real diversity on TV?
