If this is true, it’s absolutely disgraceful. Via Stephen Gutowski at Newsbusters:

AOL News has been bending over backwards lately to make sure that the do not cover the controversy surrounding Playboy.com writer Guy Cimbalo’s vile attack on conservative women. AOL News has taken some drastic steps to censor any mention, let alone criticism, of Playboy’s screed. They have deleted posts about the article, banned contributors from mentioning it, and even fired one of their liberal writers over it.

… Another former Politics Daily writer I spoke with, Caleb Howe, confirmed that fact. And while Tommy Christopher released a statement to NewsBusters criticizing AOL’s decision to let him go Caleb Howe went further than Tommy in his opinion of AOL’s motives.

“His coverage of the Playboy “hate f***” list must have had a lot to do with Tommy being fired, if not everything to do with it” Howe told NewsBusters. “It would be absurd to think the timing is coincidental” referring to the fact that Christopher was fired three days after his original Playboy story and only hours after pitching a new story on the same topic. Further allegations of AOL censoring coverage of the Playboy controversy came to light when Christopher and Howe appeared on Media Lizzy’s show this afternoon…

…Has the fact that AOL’s parent company, Time Warner, has a business relationship with Playboy may have affected their editorial decisions? After all Time Warner is a major national distributor of Playboy TV through their cable company.

This rings true to me. Corporate partnerships have led companies to do stupid things before. YouTube, which is a “strategic partner” with Universal Music Group, bowed to the music giant’s request to censor Hot Air’s video report on Akon’s onstage molestation stunt in 2007 — until the Electronic Frontier Foundation helped us fight their Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) abuse and got YouTube to restore the clip.

I certainly don’t agree with the left-leaning Christopher’s politics. But he showed guts blogging about the Playboy “hatef**k” list when few others on his side paid attention or cared. I think U.S. News should trade in tired old Bonnie Erbe and hire Tommy Christopher.

***

Speaking of Erbe, she has clarified her Playboy “hatef**k” post about me to make sure that you know she doesn’t advocate that I be raped, but that she does advocate that people publish venom-filled articles wishing for me to be raped. Thanks for the clarification!

***

Ed Morrissey:

Tommy has been a friend for quite a while, and a semi-regular guest on my daily show. He and I do not agree on most topics, but Tommy is a good opinion journalist and one of AOL’s few that actually does traditional reporting. He goes into Washington DC on his own to attend White House press briefings, occasionally getting to ask a question and providing first-person reporting for AOL-PD. That seems to me to be a valuable commodity for any political website, a marker of relevance that one does not lightly toss aside.

Many people do not know that AOL has actually conducted a massive turnover in its staff under new editor Melinda Hennenberger. Our friends Caleb Howe and Mark Impomeni have also gotten their walking papers more than two weeks ago. Both are good, solid writers, and brought a conservative perspective to AOL-PD that now the terrific Matt Lewis has to provide all on his own. Tommy could have been part of that revamping, but he appeared to have survived it — and again, why get rid of someone who has a spot inside the White House?

This is what feminism looks like: Bitter, clingy, and effete.

Oh, sorry, Mizzzz Erbe. Didn’t mean to spew my venom all over yours:

Teri Christoph, whom I have never met, asked me to stand up for conservative women who were maligned by an online article on Playboy magazine’s website. The article has since been taken off the site, but the gist of it was, indeed, disgusting, sexist, of course pornographic, and demeaning to conservative women. The article contained a list of conservative female media commentators whom the author said men would like to, er, have sex with but hate at the same time, or something nonsensical like that. Ms. Christoph sent me a link to a cached page of the now-removed article.

…I also want to note that at least one woman on the list is so venom-spewing, she unfortunately invites venom to be shot back at her: Michelle Malkin. Her posts and her “routine” are so venomous and predictable, in fact, I stopped paying attention to her years ago.

Others on the list, however, are not venom-spewing at all. One woman mentioned on the atlasshrugs2000 blog is a regular guest on my PBS show. Amanda Carpenter, on the show at least, eschews personal judgment of people with whom she disagrees politically. So her inclusion on the Playboy list is much more offensive to me than is the inclusion of Ms. Malkin, although their political views may not differ greatly.

Translation: It’s not okay to talk about “hatef**king” conservative women…unless they are rowdy, incivil conservative women who don’t behave nicely enough to be on my obscure PBS show. In which case, they deserve all the vulgar misogynist attacks they get!

***

The comments on Erbe’s post are priceless. I’m sure I’ll be blamed for all the “venom” commenters have been “spewing” there before I even linked it. Heh.

Sample:

Venom fantasy

So Erbe states she stopped paying attention to Malkin “years ago” but is convinced Malkin spews venom and therefore should expect this type of thing. So you don’t actually read her commentary but just know she is vile. Sort of like how Harry Reid has never read any of Sotomayor’s opinions, but just knows she is awesome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D22_p7CkICE). Got it. No facts or evidence needed here.

***

Ms. Erbe, Kindly Do Us All a Favor Next Time …

some conservative group naively sends you an e-mail asking you to support them, and have your IT people place their domain in your spam folder. That way you don’t even have to see their request, much less feel compelled to offer the group your “support.” (While you’re at it, maybe you could see about having them block us people who were directed here from “right wingnut” sites, so you don’t even have to read comments like mine).

You’ll be doing yourself a favor, too. Based on the comments on this story I’ve read on various sites from your fellow leftists, I’m certain that over 90 percent of your typical readers feel that every woman on that list “had it coming” just like you feel that Michelle Malkin did, and that a number of them may even feel that they would be asking for an actual, physical rape because of their conservative political views. By offering this kind of tepid, conditional “support” for the enemy, all you’re doing is alienating and confusing your reader base.

Since you’ve already given conservatives the back of your hand, who will be left to read your columns if you drive away the liberals?

***

US Snooze…

“As a nonpartisan, pro-abortion, liberal Democrat, I was perfectly happy with the leftwing misogynist haters at Playboy talking about how they would rape Michelle Malkin…”

No wonder I wasn’t aware that U.S. News was still in circulation; your columnists are just as bad/irrelevant as they used to be.

***

Pathetic

It’s this kind of twisted faux-”independence” and faux-concern-for-women that made me stop watching To The Contrary.

Given an opportunity to stand up for all women, even those Erbe disagrees with, Erbe instead chooses to use the opportunity to attack Malkin and imply she ‘deserved it’. Awful.

And if you’re going to made such an awful accusation – again implying Malkin would deserve to be hate-f***-ed, how about including some piece of accusatory evidence? What exactly has she written that’s so “venomous”? Of course Erbe has no ability to do so, and admits her own ignorance of anything Malkin’s done – to quote, “I stopped paying attention to her years ago”.

***

Unbelievable

Wow. Malkin’s inclusion is less offensive to you because she does not eschew personal judgment of people with whom she disagrees politically. Go home tonight and sip some green tea, stroke your cat, close your eyes and try to reflect (if you can) on the sublime irony of that statement.

Politico pimps for Playboy.com.

No, the moron of the day award does not go to the Playboy.com Neanderthal who published a Top 10 list (now yanked from the site and replaced with a Playboy model shoving her backside at readers) of conservative women he’d like to “hatef*ck.”

The moron of the day award goes to Anne Schroeder Mullins at Politico, who cluelessly embraced and promoted the porn magazine’s misogynist drivel — and completely misrepresented the list to Politico’s readers by whitewashing all the vulgarity out of it:

Mullins (or a commenter using her name) admits in the comments section of her moronic post that she deserves the award:

I am truly pathetic to promote an article that advocates rape of conservative women.

Posted By: Anne Schroeder Mullins | June 01, 2009 at 08:55 PM

OK, I admit it. I am truly pathetic.

Posted By: Anne Schroeder Mullins | June 01, 2009 at 08:57 PM

Writes another Politico commenter:

Anne Schroeder Mullins- You must be one of three things: 1. an idiot who didn’t understand the article, 2. a moron who didn’t even bother to read the article, 3. an offensive jackass and sexist who thought an article about fantasy raping women is amusing and worth sharing. Either way, you suck.

Posted By: fed-nad | June 01, 2009 at 10:58 PM

We concur.

***

Runner-up: Salon.com writer Gabriel Winant for “Screwing Michelle Malkin.” Winant says he found the Playboy.com attack “creepy,” but admits the piece “managed to get one or two guilty smiles out of me.”

Which part made you smile, creep? (Language warning):

Of TownHall columnist Amanda Carpenter, [Playboy.com columnist] Cimbalo writes, “The Hate Fuck Rating: This foul temptress is a walking, talking Faustian fuck bargain.” Michelle Malkin is a “highly fuckable Filipina” and a “Beelzebabe.” And “The View”’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck is just begging for defilement: “She’s the clean-cut American sweetheart who elicits our filthiest thoughts. Endlessly perky, this golden goddess probably has her Catholic school uniform still in the closet, and she wouldn’t mind putting it on before taking it off for a session of sweaty, anti-American hate fucking.”

Caleb Howe took screenshots of the entire hit piece before Playboy.com disappeared it.
