Hey, remember that judge who sentenced noise violators to Barry Manilow music? Here’s a worse sentence: Sitting through 7.5 hours of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom droning on and on and on about the “state of the city.” There are YouTube segments on health care, education, and the environment. But nada on the city’s infamously deadly illegal alien sanctuary policies.

He’s uploaded his entire speech on YouTube. Even his fellow libs can’t take it:

When San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom posted an epic State of the City speech on YouTube on Monday, reaction was mixed.

“Just what I wanted,” said Aaron Peskin, outgoing president of the Board of Supervisors. “Somebody imitating Al Gore for 7 1/2 hours. The guy did a Fidel Castro.”

…Supervisor Sean Elsbernd applauds the mayor for “a fantastic use of new technology.” But he also admitted he hasn’t watched more than 2 1/2 minutes and isn’t likely to view much more.

“Realistically, are the supervisors going to sit for 7 1/2 hours and watch this?” Elsbernd said. “No.”

A commenter cut to the chase — something Gavin Newsom seems constitutionally incapable of doing: “7 1/2 hours — plus the time spent writing, rehearsing and editing — could have been better spent solving the city’s problems instead of just talking about them.”

Gavin Newsom, still reeling from the fallout of the sanctuary-city-illegal-Honduran-crack-dealer

Garbage collectors would inspect San Francisco residents’ trash to make sure pizza crusts aren’t mixed in with chip bags or wine bottles under a proposal by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

And if residents or businesses don’t separate the coffee grounds from the newspapers, they would face fines of up to $1,000 and eventually could have their garbage service stopped.

Whew–I was having trouble sleeping because of my vivid nightmares that somewhere on Nob Hill, some BoBo might be throwing wilted radicchio in the recycling bin instead of on the compost pile.

As I’m fond of saying, you libertarian types might not like social conservatives minding what you do in your bedroom or what you grow in your basement. But the mandate for the Left’s police state extends to every room in your house, and everywhere outside it.

You might be getting sick of that neon-sign graphic on the front page, but the story of San Fran’s municipal illegal-alien-crack-dealer shuttle service just keeps on rolling on:

Three more juvenile illegal immigrant drug dealers sent by San Francisco to group homes hundreds of miles from the city have escaped, prompting juvenile probation officials to seek to bring back the only youth remaining at such a center….

The three were among the offenders previously protected from possible deportation under a long-standing city policy against handing over illegal immigrant juveniles to federal authorities, even those convicted of felonies.

Chronicle stories about the policy prompted a national outcry, and Mayor Gavin Newsom rescinded it earlier this month. The city has since referred at least 10 juvenile offenders to the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency for possible deportation.

I think San Francisco Mayor (and gubernatorial candidate) Gavin Newsom is a little bit tired of this story too:

“In many respects, this is a consequence of the policy change,” Newom said. “It goes without saying, there is an arrest warrant out.

“Enough is enough,” Newsom said.

Indeed it is, Mr. Mayor. Indeed it is.

By the way, just to point out the obvious, the policy change didn’t make those guys take it on the lam from the honor farm. They’re running free today because they were given sanctuary, and sheltered from ICE, by the City of San Francisco.

While the Chronicle’s been covering San Francisco’s Honduran crack dealer municipal shuttle service, they’ve also spared some space to write about the gubernatorial ambitions of San Fran’s mayor. Gavin Newsom thinks he’s got what it takes to succeed the Governator.

Jerry Brown–”Governor Moonbeam”–is the front runner right now, believe it or not. Mayor Villaraigosa of LA is on the list as well. For Newsom to get past them he’s going to have to explain away this ridiculous illegal alien drug-dealer ferry service the city’s been running on his watch.

Looks like his strategy for doing that is a big, clumsy, transparent buck-passing:

With his handpicked juvenile probation chief at his side, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said today that he is powerless to order that the city turn over underage illegal immigrant criminals to federal officials for deportation.

Instead, Newsom said at a City Hall news conference, the question of what to do with illegal immigrant minors who deal drugs and commit other crimes is one for juvenile court judges, the district attorney and public defender to sort out.

There’s just nothing you can do about this problem, Mayor? Well, you’re not particularly effective, are you? Even liberals aren’t buying his dodge. The Chronic’s front page includes this comment from reader “jacobin”:

Gavin (Newsom) and company have given the right-wing frothers some more “San Francisco values” to rant about. I wonder if he stays up at night thinking of ways to make elections harder for the Democratic Party.

Mmm….actually, jacobin, I don’t think that’s what Mayor Smoove stays up at night doing. But I do appreciate the San-Fran values rant-fodder. Palomino!

P.S. If you want some good news out of California, Tom McClintock’s running for Congress.

_________________

MORE: Here’s a nice little video of Mayor Smoove dealing with the press. It’s from a (sadly abandoned) blog called Gavin Watch:

He’s soooo oleaginous. If you could refine Gavin Newsom, we wouldn’t have to drill in ANWR.

Thanks to Goldwater Knight for pointing me there.

It was all political systems go for San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom at this weekend’s state Democratic convention as he hobnobbed with presidential hopefuls and party activists, and held a hasty news conference about plans for coping with disruption caused by a freeway tanker crash Sunday morning in Oakland.

The crowds at the convention Sunday were friendly, the mayor was relaxed and plenty of people wanted to shake his hand and say nice things about him. It was a far cry from just three months ago, when an embarrassing — and highly public — sex and drinking scandal was threatening Newsom’s political future.

There are still no guarantees his affair with the wife of his campaign manager and his announcement that he was seeking treatment for a growing drinking problem won’t torpedo any plans the 39-year-old mayor may have for higher office. But those dark clouds didn’t follow him into the San Diego Convention Center.

Newsom’s strong and controversial stand for same-sex marriage and his pledge last week to keep San Francisco as a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants play well with the progressive activists who made up a hefty chunk of the 2,264 delegates registered at the convention.

“Newsom’s very popular here” at the convention, said Ace Smith, a Democratic consultant with a long history in San Francisco. “The things he’s done mean something to these delegates.”

“San Francisco values” prevailed last night. Some 1,600 students of all backgrounds will now be robbed of a valuable training program that immunized them against the anti-military hatred that infests the Bay Area:

SAN FRANCISCO — High schools across the city soon will no longer have Junior Reserve Officers’Training Corps programs after officials decided to eliminate them because of the Pentagon’s”don’t ask, don’t tell”policy regarding gay service members.

The Board of Education voted 4-2 late Tuesday to phase out the JROTC from schools over the next two years, despite protest from hundreds of students who rallied outside the meeting.

The resolution passed says the military’s ban on openly gay soldiers violates the school district’s equal rights policy for gays.

The school district and the military currently share the $1.6 million annual cost of the program. About 1,600 San Francisco students participate in JROTC at seven high schools across the district.

Cadets and instructors who spoke at the meeting and rallied outside argued that the program teaches leadership, organizational skills, personal responsibility and other important values.

“This is where the kids feel safe, the one place they feel safe,”said Robert Powell, a JROTC instructor.”You’re going to take that away from them?”

Yes, they are. The program had been in place for 90 years. More on the idiocy from the San Francisco Chronicle (whose left-leaning editorial board supported the program):

Dozens of JROTC cadets at the board meeting burst into tears or covered their faces after the votes were cast.

“We’re really shocked,” said fourth-year Cadet Eric Chu, a senior at Lowell High School, his eyes filling with tears. “It provided me with a place to go.”

The proposal approved by the board also creates a task force to develop alternatives to the program that will be tried out next year at various high schools.

The board’s decision was loudly applauded by opponents of the program.

Their position was summed up by a former teacher, Nancy Mancias, who said, “We need to teach a curriculum of peace.”

The board’s move to dismantle the popular program was led by board members Dan Kelly and Mark Sanchez with support from Sarah Lipson and Eric Mar. Casting votes against it were Jill Wynns and Norman Yee. Board member Eddie Chin was absent…

…”We don’t want the military ruining our civilian institutions,” said Sandra Schwartz of the American Friends Service Committee, an organization actively opposing JROTC nationwide. “In a healthy democracy … you contain the military. You must contain the military.”

Mayor Gavin Newsom chastised the school board:

“You think this is going to help keep families in San Francisco?” the mayor added. “No. It’s going to hurt.”

Keep driving them away.

Fact:

In 1970, children younger than 18 made up 22 percent of the population compared with just under 15 percent in 2004. San Francisco has the lowest percentage of households with children among the 50 largest U.S. cities.

Although the stars and stripes predominated, some people opted to paint themselves in red, white and green, the colors of the Mexican flag. A girl no older than 6 had her shirt painted: “Hell, no, we won’t go. Mexicans stick together.”

The Dallas Morning News also reported that counter-protesters were assaulted and forced to leave under police protection:

Police told counterprotesters that they could protect them only to a point, and offered to escort them out through an underground parking lot. Six people left with police who were carrying shields and wearing helmets and shin pads.

“They’re obviously outnumbered here. If they choose to leave, we can arrange that,” said Dallas police Lt. William Humphrey.

Miles Walters, 16, a sophomore at Richardson High School, said he was scared when people started throwing water bottles and hunkered under a building for protection. “I wasn’t expecting it to be this bad,” he said. “Because we take pride in our country they hate us and call us racist.”

More:

A small group of counterprotesters shouted from a parking lot at Ross Avenue and Harwood Street: “USA, USA, You’re gonna go home, you’re gonna go home.”

Said Elijah McGrew, 48: “They are breaking the law and no one should get amnesty. If I break the law, I don’t get amnesty.”

Also in the group was Ben Blewusi, who said he came to the U.S. legally from Ghana in 2004.

“Illegal immigration is a crime in every country. I believe they are a drain on the economy and don’t pay taxes, and employers take advantage of them and enslave their labor. And as a result it drives down wages for legal migrants and U.S. citizens,” Mr. Blewusi said.

Near City Hall, more than 100 chanting protesters broke off from the main march and headed toward another group of counterprotesters. Police moved in around the counterprotesters, some of whom had hurled plastic water bottles at the large procession.

If you are holding a counter-protest, send your photos and I’ll post them.

Tony J. attended a pro-immigration enforcement rally along with a few hundred in Denver on Friday:

I’ll be covering the illegal alien demonstration tomorrow in Washington, D.C. Power Line is soliciting video from citizen journalists across the country.

Meanwhile, keep an eye on what government school officials are doing in your neighborhood.

In Tuscon:

The superintendent of the Tucson Unified School District is under fire for sending school buses to pick up student following an immigration reform protest.

But Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer defended his decision, saying police asked for the buses because a crowd of students in front of the Federal Building in Tucson was growing, water supplies were low and the temperatures were rising.

Rep. Jonathan Paton, R-Tucson, criticized Pfeuffer in a letter, asking for an explanation of the busing issue.

Paton also wanted to know about a student assembly at Tucson High Magnet School in which Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers, said, “Republicans hate Latinos.”

Paton said he wanted to find out if the assembly was mandatory, and he criticized district officials for allowing “political propaganda.”

Pfeuffer said the assembly was not connected with recent walkouts by students protesting for immigration reform and said Huerta’s appearance was part of a series of events commemorating Cesar Chavez Day held each year.

Yesterday, I noted my home county’s decision to give school credit to students who attend the April 10 illegal alien event in D.C. Here’s contact info for the Montgomery County Board of Education:

boe-at-fc.mcps.k12.md.us

Also watch your city officials. Some people are acting as if sanctuary extremists like the politicians in San Francisco are something new:

Mayor Gavin Newsom said Thursday that The City will not comply with any federal legislation that criminalizes efforts to help illegal immigrants.

The mayor also denounced a bipartisan congressional proposal that would beef up border security and allow as many as 12 million illegal immigrants to gain legal status.

Newsom, who has not been afraid to wade into controversial national issues such as gay marriage, appeared with a group of elected officials on the steps of City Hall to support immigrants, “documented as well as undocumented.”Newsom also signed a resolution sponsored by Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval, and passed unanimously by the Board of Supervisors, urging San Francisco law enforcement not to comply with criminal provisions of any new immigration bill.

Nothing new about it at all:

So, John McCain, Mike DeWine, Lindsey Graham, Arlen Specter, Sam Brownback, George Bush, & Bill Frist…Can you explain to us again why in the world we’d want to put the sort of person who was carrying this sign on the “path to citizenship?”

Also, could you explain again why we’re better off having this person here in a guest worker program than a decent person who respected our laws enough to wait in line to enter this country legally?

Heck, if you’re really in a generous mood, you could explain to us why we should believe there will be a security crackdown on illegals later, after the amnesty and guest worker programs are pushed through, when tens of thousands and in some cases, even hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens can gather in our streets, apparently without the slightest fear of being deported?

You can read the National Rifle Association’s lawsuit challenging Proposition H–the San Francisco handgun ban passed on Tuesday–here.

The AP reports:

In 1982, a state appeals court nullified an almost identical gun ban here largely on grounds that the city cannot enact an ordinance that conflicts with state law that allows for the sale and possession of handguns and ammunition.

The NRA filed its lawsuit Wednesday with the same court, the 1st District Court of Appeal in San Francisco, asking the judges to nullify the law that demands the surrender of handguns by April.

“Cities do not have the authority under the state law to ban the possession of handguns,” said NRA president Wayne LaPierre.

The group also claims the law unfairly puts San Francisco residents at a disadvantage, denying them the means to protect themselves. The law does not bar nonresidents from lawfully possessing handguns within city limits.

Mayor Gavin Newsom has acknowledged the measure likely wouldn’t withstand legal scrutiny, but said it had symbolic value.

Below the jump is a picture I think you should see–a bloody picture that should be on the front-page of every Bay Area newspaper, a picture that should have the mayor of San Francisco up in arms, a picture that will be largely ignored.

Over the weekend, I blogged about the anarchist thugs who assaulted a San Francisco police officer while trying to help control the anti-G8 riots. The officer remains in the hospital in serious condition with brain swelling. He has developed a blood clot as a result of his injuries. The SF Chronicle reports:

The department’s spokeswoman, Maria Oropeza, said the officer and his partner were driving on 23rd Street in response to a vandalism call when protesters threw a mattress underneath their patrol car.

“They got out to apprehend the suspects, at which point they were surrounded by a crowd,” Oropeza said. “One of the officers was struck on the head by an unidentified object.”

Police arrested Cody Tarlow, 21, of Felton (Santa Cruz County), Doritt Earnst, 31, of Berkeley and a third suspect who refused to identify himself.

They were being held on suspicion of attempted lynching, malicious mischief, battery to a police officer, aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and willful resistance to a police officer that results in serious bodily injury.

In addition, Tarlow was held on suspicion of wearing a disguise for the purpose of escaping discovery or identification with a public offense. Earnst was also suspected of removing a weapon other than a firearm from an officer, and the unidentified man was suspected of inciting a riot.

The Indymedia cop-bashers gloat here. Will Franklin guest-blogging at Wizbang has much more. See also Independent Sources. SF Mayor Gavin Newsom vows to be “more vigilant.” The anarchists are trembling, I’m sure.

Here’s contact info for the San Francisco Police Department, for those who want to send a note of encouragement to the wounded officer. He has not been unidentified, but I’m sure the PD folks will make sure your mail gets to him.

On a related note, LGF points out that Google News has reinstated the violence-promoting Indymedia as a legitimate news source. I suggest e-mailing the photo below to the editors at Google News and asking why.
